What happens to our online selves when we die?

Interesting article about the ghost we leave in the machine.

That's a great article - poignant and very thought provoking.

Thanks Steve.

HEY! I thought that URL looked familiar! I've got that paper sitting on my coffee table!

Most interesting are the personal ads though Shocked

About 7-8 years ago, someone with whom I'd argued frequently on The Well about many topics gradually let on that she had breast cancer. That was why she and I had radically different perspectives on the worth of the medical profession. (Of course, I baited her with topics like "Who deserves the appellation 'doctor'?" to make fun of her PhD which she liked to flaunt.)

Anyway, when she died I cried mightily. My wife worried that I'd had some sort of online affair, but it was different. Somehow, someway, I'd lost a friend. Interesting how that works with the internet.

I've met my long lost twin brother (the one that was kept hidden in the attic) through some forum postings at work - but I've never met the guy and will never meet him. No, we're not really related. But, if/when he dies, I'll feel a loss of the same magnitude. If I'm ever informed that he's died...

i always (or once or twice) worry about my online friends not ever finding out about my death. perhaps one day i just don't come back. it probably wouldn't even occur to my fleshy friends and family that there'd be people i've never 'met' who i'd quite like to know that i've stepped outside and may be some time.

maybe i'll start an 'in case of my death' list to accompany my christmas card one.

I figure you'll just wind up with a really extended visit from the cats in #uf.

Or, perhaps I'll get mIRC installed on one of these:
