The reason for pre-release sites, hints, clues etc.
[SPEC]

Hi all. Newbie here.
Just been ponderin about the need to disclose the Slusho main ingredient as well as all the accompanying sites before the release of the film. Whats the purpose? IMHO, it would seem that if this film is actually all shot on a handheld cam and follows the attack of this monster on NYC, then all we would see in the theaters is this handheld-as-it-happens video of this one groups experience. Since they dont know whats causing this to happen and they apparently dont have much time to figurre it out in real time, perhaps the producers decided that they had to 'leak' the facts that surround the plot in advance so we moviegoers will see it after the fact as a video found in the rubble of Central Park.
Its obvious that we wont get the standard army footage of their top minds figuring all this out like the usual monster movies and letting us know the facts of how, where and why this monster came to be and how we kill it, so how do the writers etc explain to us how this all happened if the cast is dead before they can figure it out?
I believe its the reason for all this advance plot with the deep sea nectar and sea drilling and slusho etc. Its the only way they can set it up so we dont wind up going into a movie theater and seeing a monster destroy NY and the cast with no explanations.
So, as the clues come faster now, its up to us to decipher the plot before we go to see it and then we will be watching the 'found' footage just like whoever found it will. By then, they will know what happened and why and if we put all the clues together, so will we.
Thoughts?

While I agree in spirit with your post, i am sure to some extent that's what is going on but by and large, the majority of the people that see this movie are not following things here or on other websites, blogs, and forums.
They average moviegoer will have maybe just cursory knowledge of what its about. "Monster attacks NY". That sounds cool, lets go see it. So the movie will have to provide enough information to those casual moviegoers so that they dont leave saying, "What the .... was that?"
I am thinking there will be smaller things in the movie that only "we" will get or understand. We will see a scene and say "ah! Thats what is happening to the exploding lady", or "Oh! Deep sea nectar, Now i get it" The average moviegoer wont notice it, and wont care cause it wont distract from the overall movie.
I think that everything that we are finding here are all minor things that will ad to "our" viewing pleasure and experience. Enough to get "Us" psyched about this movie but wont matter to the average movie going guy. Know what I mean?

the reward

Yes, the "reward" for this Cloverfield game is having a lot of background info that the movie probably won't have time to go into heavy detail about.

Call me crazy, but does anyone think maybe, just maybe, Melodyman and Jaded X are the same guy? I mean, one guy posts at 3:09, and then 12 minutes later (enough time to create a new account), another guy who just up and registered today (exactly like Melodyman), pops up and congratulates Melodyman on an awesome idea. Hmm....

EDIT: You know, for that matter, somebody could say that triplare could also be a Melodyman persona.

Haha. Now I feel paranoid. I don't know whether Critical is another Melodyman, or if... Laughing I will try to contain my suspicions for now, and stay on topic.

Yes, I do believe this whole game is being used not only a form of advertisement, but as a way of giving the film a backstory without having to waste screentime. Also, I think they will, if they're smart, make the film that needs no knowledge of the backstory to enjoy.

I gotta tell you I'd be pretty pissed if we had to go through the movie frame by frame just like the trailer to find important stuff.
