I want a written and public apology from you on 1-19-08 when this is proven to be the noodly appendage of our dear monster. Laughing

I, too have wondered about that strange tree-like structure seen in the middle of the poster. However, many threads have stated it is simply smoke.Supposedly.

You need the extended poster with the start of the bridge visible on the right hand side.

I started a post I think the day after the poster was released on another forum, thinking that was indeed the creature. I did all sorts of zooming in, negatives, etc.. and I don't think it's smoke. Simply because smoke never, ever looks like that. There are some "tendrils" that are looped. Smoke does not react like the things in that image. If you zoom in far enough, you can find on other side, things that look like eyespots.

Or put it another way. This isn't a picture, it's a painting, an artists rendering. There is plenty of other smoke in that picture. Why would he deviate on that one spot? Over the moon?

Also consider this. The poster is a sequence of events. It's not a static picture. There are bits of the Statue of Liberty that are flying off, as if it were just attacked. There is a water trail, as if the monster just went into the city. There is an explosion! Look to the left and down from the moon by the building. There is an explosion. If you negative the poster, you can see lines going out from between the building as to indicate force of an explosion. And that thing is right by the explosion.

So no, I don't think it's smoke, I think it's the critter. When I thought of that in fact, I was really thinking "huh, it IS Cthulhu! Because it looks like his head from behind, his head raised up, tentacles spread wide.

IMO, I don't think that is the monster, 'cause that just looks like smoke to me.

I challenge anyone to find a picture of real smoke on the internets that looks like that!
Seriously am I the only one who sees it? Has the world gone mad and I am the only sane one left Crying or Very sad

Your logic is skewed...
Of course you aren't going to find a picture of REAL smoke that looks like this... Want to know why? Because the smoke of this picture is NOT REAL smoke.

This along with the Hair Goblin, Fuzzy green mirror skull and yes even photo-shopped smokey flying spaghetti monster are all just what we want/can't help but see.

Step 1) see strange formation (cloud, rock, moon craters, smoke)
Step 2) brain analyzes patterns and shapes
Step 3) brain takes partial patterns and shapes and fills in the blanks with familiar continuations of these partials (although it may be in an artisitic style)
Step 4) Brain recognizes full object and "locks-on" to idea
Step 5) brain convinces itself that what it sees is real (I mean how could the moon NOT have a giant face on it if I see it right there?!)
Step 6) brain tells fingers it would be a good idea to post super awesome original I am the smartest person in the world findings on Unfiction.com
Step 7) brain realizes it was wrong about Step 6

Okay so 6 and 7 were just for fun, but you get the gist Very Happy

To be honest, I am well aware of the possibility that it is just smoke, and there is no way to be sure one way or another what it is. I think this image is a perfect example of how people choose what they "want" to believe from something almost perfectly ambiguous (can go one way or another).
To say with any kind of certainty one way or another whether that is smoke or part of the beast is really only a matter of opinion.
I cannot rule out the possibility because of how foreign it looks in comparison to the smoke around it and in comparison to real smoke. Also i think it is a bit poetic to sneak in an ambiguous part of the monster right under our noses (goes with the theme of ambiguity throughout the Cloverfield viral marketing and probably most of the movie).

'heytheyfoundabody' is right. Remember when we spotted the monster's face in the clouds on the same poster? Of course, this is still a plausible theory. I still visualize nothing but smoke, though.

In the end, can this even be proven one way or another? No matter what the monster ends up looking like, people can say, "Yeah, I see the monster there." What's currently supposed to be a tentacle or whatever will just get retconned in people's heads into a kneecap, eyestalk or what have you after the fact.

Anyway, I think it's clear from the poster that the monster is the Playboy Bunny. Very Happy

Yeah I can see that. I notice it right when I first look at it, I'd probably even notice that without being told (in the zoomed in pic).

So the monster is........... Treebeard??? Shocked

Seriously though, a tentacled monster is WAY scarier than a godzilla/t-rex monster.

I'd agree with you on the "billowing" thing if there wasnt such spindly detail to the darker smoke. The lighter stuff in the background looks like it is billowing because it is more solid.
Perhaps JJ put that in the poster to &*%$ with people like me who look too much into pictures, such as those who saw the hair goblin:

Ah, yes good old hair goblin. I miss his disturbing face. But it was annoying that he kicked of a Power Rangers remake rumour though.

But anyway, the smoke monster things. It is probably nothing. A lot of these things are just illusions, when our brain is playing tricks on us when we are desparate to see something. A lot of these things started during the painful quiet period, just before the trailer came out. And then even when we weren't desparate any more, we remember what we saw and convince ourselves that it's still there. I personally can't see anything, but other people might because when they were looking for clues when there weren't any, they thought they saw something in the smoke. Just my opinion.
