wow, um, looks like I missed alot today. I wonder if this is the right ARG for someone who is extremely bee-phobic?

I'm trying to catch up here, where did the name "The Haunted Apiary" come from? Did I miss it in all the posts here somewhere?

It came from the mind of SpaceBass, no more, no less. Smile

Apiary: a place where bees & beehives are kept.
Haunted: Well, something's messing up the webpage...

Ok just a list of what I'm getting here:

-It seems that the site has been taken over by something.
-It is in trouble.
-Its quoting famous litriture.

Things that are just spec:

-Its Confused.
-Its afraid.
-It doesn't know that its 'thoughts' are getting out there (it thinks no-one can hear it and no-one is coming).
-Something (or someone) is coming after it.
-It is trapped somewhere, maybe on an island, ship wrecked.
-Reminicent of the CyberGhost/GarbageCollecter from 'Project Mu' and the way it communicated to beth (IE. expressing thoughts through the electronic equipment around it)
-It wants Help.
-Its possibly Hurt
-It does seem rather fragmented machine like thought. Could be a AI or just the subconsious of someone.

FYI, and mentioned by several people:
The address for the package, as well as the address on the site registry for ilovebees.com and ilovebees.net is for a UPS Store in San Fran. If you Google, you will find several other organizations list PO Boxes there as their return address.

First:

http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/counting-down-to-what.html#comments

I dont know who found it first....I stumbled across it on my own.....

Second:

I thought I hear sounds in the backround of the .wavs on the site....I mentioned this to cath (who had posted the wavs but not got around to listening to them properly)......Queen-piping is the sound of sea gulls slowed down....and the other one bees1 sounds as though it has something (i say a sort of 'clink') in the backround but we cant single it out.

When looking individually at any of the older posts in Dana's Blog (such as Damage http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/damage.html), they all have a link to a post called "Let's Squash This Sucker".

http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/lets-squash-this-sucker.html

However, this link goes to a "not found" Blogger page.

Also, "Let's Squash This Sucker" is not availiable from the main Blog page.

Hmm...

Er, the above post is by me, RobMagus. Sorry. Still getting used to this forum.

Also, upon further investigation, "Let's Squash This Sucker" is not listed under "Previous Posts" when looking individually at "Delinquent" and "Countning Down to WHAT?".

Could this be an old post that has been since removed?

Received emails from Dana today (emailed her yesterday at danatwingSPLATgmail.com and her aunt at ladybee777SPLAThotmail.com). Quoted here (with my original text):

Quote:
Hi again Eve,

My aunt is (understandably) a bit freaked out by everything that's
going on with the site, and as the officially designated debugger of
the family, she's forwarding all recent site-related mail on to me.

The honey's on backorder right now because of a varrao infestation in
her hives. But I'll be happy to let you know when Aunt M's back in
business.

d.

p.s. wonky is exactly the word I used to describe the site meltdown
when I first saw it!

Hi Eve,

thanks much for the note, good to have someone with your expertise on
board (what kind of science?)... I would definitely love to know if
you can spot anything that I've missed on the site, or just get your
ideas in general about what's going on. I'm having a hard time
wrapping my brain around it.

Hey Dana,

Just thought I'd drop a note and see if you needed any help with the
ILoveBees.com bugs... no doubt you've had a veritable flurry of
response to your blog, but nonetheless I'm volunteering my bit of
expertise (web design, some science background, etc.).

Best of luck in any case,
Eve

The repeated referrence to the varroa [varrao] mites has me bugged (ha ha), and I found this:

http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/misc/bees/varroa_mite.htm

which gives us this info:

Quote:
common name: varroa mite
scientific name: Varroa jacobsoni Oudemans (Arachnida: Acari: Varroidae)

The mites are arachnids - obvious when you think about it - which makes me wonder if the mites and website problems are connected. Might the apparently trapped entity actually be a bee (queen bee? the hive?) with SPIDERS (i.e. arachnids) swarming it? Think about all the references to queens, chambers, spiders, etc.

Well, it may all be so much sand in the wind but I thought I'd throw this all out there...

Another random text-snippet from the "hacked" site:

"It happened one day, about noon, going towards my boat, I was exceedingly surprised with the print of a flea's naked foot on the shore, which was very plain to be seen on the sand."

Identical to a line from Robinson Crusoe, except the original line is "a man's naked foot," not a flea's.

More text, this time from hives.html

Quote:
MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY
Of course the crew won't come for me if they're all dead. If they're all dead and I alone am left to tell the tale.

I'm crying, and my tears are made of sand.

(spec)

Given the various console commands, references to being a navagator, and crew for a ship of some sort, perhaps this trapped being is a rudimentary AI for ships navigation, crashed on a planet?

Of course, I read too much SF, but still..

*edit: Never mind. Some of the stream-of-consciousness snippets refer to torture, drugs, close relationships, references to self as 'girl', etc. Computers don't generally have a reason to know how to avoid torture, unless they're in the Matrix. Shocked

*edit the second: I have way too much time on my hands, so I compiled a list of all the text that appears when you hit refresh, organized by page. I've missed a few, I believe, but it's fairly comprehensive.

Word Wrap is strongly encouraged for these text files.

*edit the third: Note to self; when finding a rabbithole thread in News & Rumors, look for a separate section so that you may not do a whole lot of useless work.

Maybe this stuff'll still help someone.

Sorry, all.

Yeah, we've been picking up on it the past day or so, and semi-quietly freaking out ourselves over here.

I love how, at that forum, the profanity filter changes censored words to -blam!-. That never stops making me giggle.
