Look at the angle of destruction, where the claw marks started. It is obviously MUCH much taller than the Statue of Liberty, and so it didn't need to plant it's feet anywhere near the base or on the statue of liberty. The angle is like a softball through, going from the hip region and UP, or like an upper cut!!

Some people still don't get it! You guys really don't understand the scope here. First there was to post about the SoL head being to small and looking out of proportion and now this one about no claw marks and the creature would have to be so very large to do that.
The SoL is not, I'll repeat that. is not that big! Yes that's including the pedestal.
The SoL from Foundation of pedestal to torch is 306ft 8" (93.47m)
The Buildings you see here, in the poster they are shown wrecked and clawed is TWO World Financial Center and at its tallest its about 645ft(197 m)
C'mon guys. before you make post like this do some research please. I'm not trying to flame anyone here. I'd just like people to get they're facts straight first. The way I see it this ones a no brainer
If you really want to be clever. Figure out how..as the trailer shows us... that that one gigantic building is leaning at an angle up against the building next to it.. now that is something for debate.

I pointed out the monster has to fit between the SoL and the Empire State Building in height, considering the destruction we've seen and that we can't see it beyond the taller buildings around the ESB. Your information about 2WTC puts it at about 700ft tall - right in the range I laid out.

I've been pondering that, and to me that's always been a bother. I know it's pretty unlikely because when the steel structure at the base is disrupted like that it should crumple downward. I also noticed the lights are still on in that building - not too likely that, eh?

What about the theory of multiple monsters? One that can fly maybe?

If you want to approximate handsize, check the SoL head in the new trailer. Theres (IIRC) 4 claw marks in it, three on one side of the head and one (thumb) one on the other. Grumpypants palmed the sol head.
And why is one building leaning against the other with the lights on? Because if it collapsed our heroes couldnt go climbing through it to get Beth

Hmm, we never see the Empire State Building in the trailer, it's not where the explosion goes off if that's where you mean. The buildings around the explosion site are about half the height of the ESB, but we don't know what causes the explosion yet, my guess is it isn't directly caused by the monster, as you think you'd hear some destruction before it gets so far inland.

Yeah if the jets are filmed by Hud, it's the only explanation I can think of why they'd be up there.

well in the official movie description, they DO describe it as being the size of a skyscraper...
Im thinking somewhere around 500-600 feet.

Because the ocean is very VERY deep. If the monster was as tall enough as to stand on the ocean floor and still be able to move and knock the statues head off, he would have made a much bigger entrance into NYC.
You do realise New York harbour isn't as deep as the ocean, the Normandie capsized at Pier 88 in Hell's Kitchen and a lot of the hull was still above water level...

On 1-18-08 people will stop complaining about the torch of the SoL being closed, eh?
I'm sure you meant the crown, Liberty's torch has only ever been open for a limited time because it can only be accessed by ladder. I don't believe the torch was ever even open to the public after it was installed after the public exhibition it was at.

I know we don't see the ESB in the trailer and teaser, but we do know that many of the buildings nearby are a good portion of it's total height. In the poster and in the teaser, we don't see the monster despite seeing the carnage and indications in both that the attack is still under way. Even the glimpse we see in the trailer shows us that it's pretty tall, but not tall enough that Hud looks up to see it clearly over the buildings in front of him.
550-750ft is sounding like a good range for Grumpypants.

So, here's a question for debate - Which of the following is more plausible, given what we know or can safely infer about Grumpypant's size, body structure, etc...
1. Grumpypants was somehow created or designed (by Ganu/Tagruato); or,
2. Grumpypants was found, i.e., is a naturally occurring organism that's simply remained undetected for all these years; or,
3. Grumpypants was not purposefully engineered by anyone, but is the result of some kind of toxic contamination resulting in the mutation of a whale or some other natural sea creature.
Given the sheer size of this thing, and the fact that it can walk, and can roar (i.e., lungs), and has arms and/or clawed tentacles strong enough to rip off the SOL's head... whaddyall think? Based on what we can guess about the thing, I think #2 has to be ruled out, but I dunno. Thoughts?
Oh, and I suppose we shouldn't rule out #4 either:
4. Grumpypants is "not of this world," i.e., extra-terrestrial, or extra-dimensional.
[And, I realize the answer might just be: It's a movie! Stop over-thinking it! but, c'mon... it's fun ].

The Empire State Building is visible in the teaser, but it's back when Rob and Co. are on the roof before the first major explosion. The building people are mistakenly referring to as the Empire State, with the illuminated roof is the Woolworth Building.
As for lighting in the damaged portion of Time Warner Center, it depends ultimately if all the wiring is torn out... could be there's enough connections left for the lights to work... but let's not forget that a building that size will almost surely have some sort of emergency lighting.
I wouldn't use anything from the poster as concrete info on the monster as it's an artistically rendered moment meant to capture people and give them a quick visual synopsis of the events, and that there's a good chance the artist doesn't know the specs of the monster... and was simply told to carve up the back of the statue as well as a collection of the buildings in Downtown, even the Downtown skyline has been composited with one of the World Financial Buildings being moved nearly all the way to Battery Park.
Anyway, as we know he trashed Time Warner Center, and this is from established events from the film rather than the questionable facts from the poster, the estimated height range of around 750 feet seems pretty good as the towers of TWC are 750 ft tall.

I think if it was 700 feet + in height it would use the SoL's head like a marble. It would be like a gumball in Shaq's hand. I so wish it would be 700 feet tall as that would be so cool. No way to know for sure but I think it is going to be 350-400 feet tall. At 350-400 feet tall it would still be able to reach the tops of the buildings we see with damage in the trailer and be able to palm the SoL's head with ease.

Yeah the poster is like snapshots of the destruction all combined into one, hence the wake and debris still falling off the statue when the monster is deep into the city.
