[INFO] Dana's Blog (up thru Friday, July 23)

Isn't it about time somebody started a thread for it? :j

Anyways, to repeat something from the Strange Package thread:

When individually viewing older posts from the blog, some of them have a link to a post called "Let's Squash This Sucker".

http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/lets-squash-this-sucker.html

This link does not go anywhere. I speculate that it is an older post that has since been removed.

Now, I wandered around the Blogger website and came across this:

http://www.blogger.com/knowledge/2004/06/hacking-blogger-matrix.pyra

Probably unrelated to the puzzle, but it may be of some help in finding more about "Let's Squash This Sucker".

Also, that article made me smile with this bit:

"But now I want to invite you to join me. Take the red pill, Neo, and I'll show you how deep the rabbit hole goes." Laughing

***

Allrighty. Now we have a blog thread. Yay!

... *sigh*

Yet again, that was me. I forgot to set the forum to log me in automatically. ... Problem solved. Smile

Also, I am sending an email to Dana about "Let's Squash This Sucker".

Part of Dana's email reply, concerning the lost post:

"originally I had a post up under "let's squash this sucker", and then
a friend of mine suggested that "squash this sucker" might be
interpreted as an invitation for hackers to come make an even bigger
mess of the site. So, he suggested that I make my plea for help in
slightly less incendiary language. I did, and now I don't know why
Blogger still has a record of that deleted post."

Well, that sheds some light on that.

Anyone got any other Blog bits?

In case you're only reading the blog entries and not the comments, you might not have seen that Dana replied in her comments under the "Counting down to WHAT?" entry on 7/17/2004 02:23:33 PM :

Would not have guessed from the usually humble traffic stats for Aunt Margaret's site that I'd get so many offers of help so quickly — wow. Thank you.

More information: Well, first of all, yes, I did put a "...days to china" counter on the site, a tiny one below the fold. Sort of a persistent thank-you... Aunt M is the fairy godmother of my trip. But MY countdown has suddenly become this THING's countdown... it's barreling towards a different time and date now, and I've certainly never described my departure as "wide awake and physical."

Actually, the more I poke around it, the more it looks like everything on the site has been hijacked. Everything I built or uploaded is still there, it's just been... repurposed.

And yeah, I keep thinking I'm seeing and hearing "i love bees" everywhere, too. I guess the feeling of hallucinating is contagious.

Anyway, I just want to say: when the site meltdown first happened, it was extremely startling, and overwhelming. Finding out now that there are so many people out there willing to throw their oar into this mess, well — that's startling and overwhelming, too... but in a good way. A really good way. Thanks.

Not sure if this is relevant but the quote under the title of her blog is from Kafka's The Metamorphosis

Heh... this is funny: there is a http://widow.blogspot.com and a http://queen.blogspot.com. Both are likely just coincidences (second one a little creepier, because it's titled Queen Bee).

P.S. - O.T. - awesome new board features, thanks!

So what's with the naming conventions on these blog entries? The normal text entries all have names associated with the titles ("damage.html", "delinquent.html", etc.), but the entries with screencaps of the ilovebees.com site are all numeric. Is this something, or is it just a factor of how blogspot works?

Screencap names:

www_10898712253210927.html == Honey
www_108987120444037801.html == Hives
www_108987125849723690.html == Links
www_108987119100559162.html == About
www_108987117889697616.html == Index

I found it odd, but that might be just because I don't know where these numeric sequences are coming from.

Edit: One other thing I just noticed: The links to INDEX from HONEY, HIVES, and LINKS are broken. They link to www_12.html instead of the numeric sequence listed above. The link to INDEX from ABOUT is correct and links properly.

A fine idea. I just sent Dana an email asking about it. Will post any useful info that comes of it.

I went hiking in Claremont Canyon yesterday to clear my head. Three hours, six miles, and 1000 ft elevation change later, I was sweaty, sunburnt and still fixated on the bug and its countdown. While up there, didn't pay enough attention to the trail... scratched my palms slipping on loose gravel, more than once. Now it hurts to type.

You know the special dates that mean something to you, but not everyone else? (For me, March 21 will always be the day I got called to the Vice Principal's office for cutting 8th-grade chorus. I think it's because I have a permanently ingrained mental image of the yellow hall pass that was sent from the VP's office to collect me.)

(tries to stop thinking about it)

Time for some updates:

Aunt Margaret wants you to know how touched she is by the flood of support we've gotten on this blog and via email. So touched that she wants to mix a new flavor of her honey in honor of you guys — a black button sage variety, but I'm not sure she knows what to call it yet.

Warm fuzzies aside... the hijacked countdown has definitely gotten under Aunt M's skin. "Strong intrusive inclination" gives her the "heeby jeebies" (her words). She asked me if "the medium will metastasize" means that her computer is going to explode. I'm pretty sure it doesn't, but unfortunately for now, I don't have a more optimistic interpretation to offer her.

I hate that Aunt M is losing sleep over this.

Or that I am, for that matter. (checks timestamp. Sigh.)

I'd feel a lot more comfortable if I understood its motives better…

At least I now know from Marc (first of several) that the image glitches are caused by embedded texts of origins unknown. Not sure how they fit together.

I'm guessing from the some of the emails I've received that at least a handful of you are chewing on this problem in real-time somewhere...? Is there a channel I can direct other people to, so they can sync up with you?

P.S. A lot of you have sent emails asking for personal information that might be relevant to the problems at I Love Bees. To be honest, I'm still figuring out how much I feel comfortable sharing at this point. I hope you can be patient with me.

Lots of very specific tech questions and advice coming in lately, think I'll try to address it all in one fell swoop here.

1. The site is hosted using a standard ISP. I really don't want to get too specific given that not all of the attention I've received lately has been what you'd call benevolent. Sorry. That's just the way it is.

2. Nothing unusual about the logs. Good suggestion, though. Will continue to monitor.

3. As recommended, tried deleting my own countdown script. Didn't work. Saved the page without the countdown, but it still shows up on the live site. It's just... stuck, or something.

4. Multiple queries from you guys about other projects I've worked on and other sites on the server, wondering if they may have been infected by the same bug. I've checked this one up, down and sideways, and I am pretty confident saying that I am not aware of any similar occurrences.

please keep uploading your ideas and theories. thanks, guys.

It sounds like another server script is inserting the countdown code, similar to the way it inserts text into images upon delivery. She can't "fix" the HTML any more than she can "fix" the corrupted images, not until she has access (and know-how) to reconfigure the server. Her hosting company wouldn't be ... oh, i don't know ... SATAN.net? Hmmm?

dates...

She seems to be focused on the date August 24, which I assume, but am to lazy or drunk to colaboate, as the date the countdown will end.
Is this some how linked to the puzzle (of course Joe Strummer, of the greatest band in the world is important to this date, but what else concerning this date relates to this puzzle?)

guesses

From the blog:

Quote:

If we assume dana is 22, what year would she have been in 8th grade?

If she was 13 when she was in 8th grade, that would have been 9 years ago, which would be 1995

does March 21, 1995 mean anything?

or the numbers:
3 21 8 ( from the date and the mention of 8th grade chorus)

many thanks for the info about the IRC channel, wikis, etc. I'll probably stick to the blog myself if you guys don't mind (easier for me heading out of the country to keep things central), but definitely good to know where to direct anyone who might want to join forces.

(contemplates setting up a links sidebar.)
(so tired of looking at code.)

Rose... that's an apt perspective: "you wanted to be in a strange new world, it looks like one came to you... without your having to leave home after all." True, isn't it? Be careful what you wish for, is that what they say?

(keeps packing backs for China, anyway.)

Dana has the good sense to keep away from us IRC wackos. Smile
