Is everyone forgetting that the on screen display there was generated by them? It's not like they filmed this with the normal input from NY1's systems. This TV 'broadcast' was staged, and very likely everything in it is quite intentional - like the time displayed.
You'll also notice that the pictures on 1-18-08.com (hmmm, there's a date) are all printed with the timestamp 1-18-08 (there's that date again) and the backs of some are inscribed by the partygoers in a fashion that doesn't say "Holy crap! We survived that monster attack, so let's go have a drink!" It's pretty safe to say the intent is for the events to actually be happening on January 18th, 2008. If they don't intend that to be the case, they've seriously radically hosed their own continuity in a way that'll be echoed in the annals of filmmaking forever.

I find that to be the least likely of the options. Given who we are dealing wtih here...

I get what you're saying Euchre. I hope you don't think i was implying that they time traveled to January 18, 2008 and filmed a movie. Of course it was staged. The question that this thread is really trying to answer is :

Why is there such an extreme temp. in January when the monster attacks?

I lived in Manhattan for 16 years of my life and know PERSONALLY that is very warm for January.

Greetings all. Normally I like to stick to the sidelines and let the minds at work here handle the business, but on this topic I felt compelled to ante up.

I'm another here who can vouch for NYC normally being snow covered and chilly around the January time frame, but from a movie-making POV, don't you guys think it would look ridiculous to have our gigantasaurus rex thrashing about in the snow? Considering how entrenched the city normally is at this time of the year, I really think staying completely true to the real-life weather effects would take away from the allure of a monster ripping through Manhattan. On top of that, could you imagine hundreds of people running down the streets sliding on ice or hopping over snow drifts? Shear pandemonium.

My best guess is that JJ and team took a look at that and said, "Yeah, let's up the temp and blame it on global warming or something."

I could go for a monster movie in the snow. It'd be different, that's for sure. I think people sliding around, and maybe the monster too, would make it pretty funny and yet oddly more scary and treacherous at the same time.
Hard to top things they already have in the movie, like women exploding.

(Yes, I'm really hoping that's really what we are seeing. Twisted Evil )

Kind of worked for the Peter Jackson version of Kong. Even though the Kong sliding on the pond with Naomi Watts caused a hushed ponder in the room.

Absolutely. There's something about this scenario both hilarious and horrifying. Plus it would be a fresh take, I just don't think JJ had the same idea in mind. If that were the case, I think it would be safe to assume the monster isn't a creature at all, but rather a snow plow from hell. I wonder how that would go over with the audience.. Razz

I agree, when it comes to talking about a figure skating gorilla and his fair maiden sharing a tender moment. I see you found that odd too. Wink But the factor missing from Kong is the destruction on a catastrophic level. To me, that's part of the attraction here. It's one thing to say, "Holy gee-whiz, that monster just took out half that building!", and another thing to say, "Holy gee-whiz, that monster just knocked down a lot of snow!... and half the building is gone too!"

I still don't understand why anyone would have problems justifying that temp. I posted an article from this past January when it was 72 degrees. It does happen.
