Perhaps the animal has laid eggs or polyps in buildings/subways? The flutters could be little Grumpy Pants. I seem to recall that there is a clip in the trailer Rob and Jamie are yelling "No Jason!" or something rather like that. Jason's death could well be the denouncement of the film-- he does something to allow the others to escape. Just speculation of course.
