[Spec] Alive: The monster's name? Hey all, long time lurker and first time poster here. This site has been my main source for Cloverfield discussion and speculation, so I wanted to share this small, probably useless idea I had with you. And I apalogize if it's already been brought up (I tried searching it, but seeing how it's one of the most discussed topics...Yeah, it didn't work out all that great).
But back to business. Like I said in the title, what if Alive is the monster's name? My reasoning for this is that obviously the two people in the trailer knew about it and made a big deal of saying that. Everyone assumed they met some kind of object, but what if it's some kind of creature? Let's say that the monster originally is some kind of animal that they found. It could be from an entirely new species and gathered attention because it was A: dying, and B: intelligent (or some other peculiar trait). Then it recovered against all odds, and the media or it's caretakers dubbed it Alive for being alive, instead of the more cliched and obvious Hope. Then, of course, shit happens, Alive grows exponantially (after coming in contact with the deep sea nectar?) and starts rampaging around New York. But it still looks like it did before, hence the shocked "I saw it, it's Alive (and it's huge)!"
There's also the possibility that it's a different name, that sounds like alive but isn't spilled that way. Perhaps there is a Japanese or Chinese sign (forgot what they're called, sorry) that has the same pronouncation as "alive", or maybe it's "Elyve", or something like that.
Well, that's about it. It's probably nothing, but I'd still like to hear you guy's thoughts on this (and once again sorry if this has been brought up already).

Interesting.
I still get the feeling that the reason for the it's alive line is in responce to the earth shaking. Hence that wasn't an earthquake but something that is alive.
But your theory I think is a way better explanation

Strange that they'd name it that, but still (slightly) possible.
And airteff, the woman asks "What is it? Is it coming this way?" so everybody knows by that time that it's not an earthquake.

It's always bothered me that.
In both trailers, "It's alive!"
Seems an odd thing to me to say, like you don't expect it to be, as if you had seen it before and it wasn't alive then. If its a big scary monster then you would expect it to be alive, if my cooker grew legs and came after me I may say "it's alive!"
Had they seen it before maybe?

Your missing something.
Rob said 'SomeTHING attacked this city' implying he didnt know what it was.
The marines, also stated that they didnt know what it is.
Sorry, but the majority of the population knowing what this monster is is out of the question.

Plus, as names go... there'd be a lot more appropriate choices than 'Alive' which is after all a descriptive word and not a titular word*.
* With the exception of Alive! , but that's a minor exception.

I don't think it's going to flow like that.
"I SAW IT, IT'S ALIVE, IT'S HUGE!"
kind of equates to
"I'm hungry."
and you asking me for my driver's licence because you think my name is Hungry.

I doubt that's the name they give it. But I am confused about the second "alive" comment in the trailers. The first, probably first sighting, ok... he might say "it's alive, it's huge." Maybe it washed up on the beach earlier in the day, or whatever as some have suggested.
But the second time, it was well into the movie. They obviously by this point KNOW the thing is alive. Why say it again? Unless perhaps this scene is after the bombing scene by the military jets, and people thought it had been killed. And once he realizes it didn't die, "it's alive" might make a bit of sense.
Still weird tho.

first 'It's Alive' - as stated, because people would be speculating, earthquake, meteor strike, huge gas or electrical explosion, terrorist attack, etc.
second 'It's Alive' (in shop) - presumably much later into the running time after the main characters have witnessed massive firepower directed at the Grump from Army and Air Force and assumed it dead or fatally wounded.

I think both scenes are quite close together actually. Rob's got his jacket on in both.

We dont know that. For all we know, it could be a short while after.
Frankly I see nothing confusing about saying its alive twice.
