[NOT A PUZZLE: ILB.com] Email Hacking

I tried a password in the ladybee777 account, but hotmail has blocked it because of too many unsuccesful sign-ins.

This thread is to record passwords you've tried so that people don't try them again and block the account again.

Please make sure that you specify which account (ladybee or danatwing) you tried to hack.

and now for some speculation:

I've heard that we've tried farnsworth already. have we tried dana?

How about names from the authors and books that she likes; ie. Brother Cadfael?

If you guys manage to get in, I'll be pretty surprised. Hotmail is, as far as we know, a separate entity from anything controlled by the PMs. If breaking into the e-mail were solvable, what would it take for someone watching our boards to figure it out, log in, delete everything that's in there, perhaps change the profile settings, send out some spam, and then jam the password so it's unusable by anyone, ever again?

Even if it's truly linked to an XBox game, I remain skeptical that this is what we're supposed to be doing right now. I'm NOT saying you shouldn't do it, but I do believe it to be a exercise in futility.

I wasn't trying to be harsh! I mean, OK, I suppose it is possible that the PMs would have some way of creating an extra-super-special Hotmail account that a player could 'crack' and log in to, but then not be able to do anything except read messages, or perhaps add contacts to a list or something. But this means they'd have to have someone on the inside at Hotmail.

I don't have any proof so far that hotmail.com is an in-game site, and so I am not sure at all that hacking the account is even possible, or even the point.

from discussion in #beekeepers, it's possible that the PMs did not forsee us attempting to get into the accounts, especially with the password reset method. We could concievable then change the password if we got in, and keep the PMs out.

A whole boatload of trouble, seems to me. Thoughts?

ladybee777 account issues

It seems to me that the danger is that if someone does successfully get in, whether by guessing the password or resetting it, that the working password is then posted here, and someone else can use it to reset the password and lose control of the account.

Here's what I'm thinking. If someone does get in there, they then collect all the information (be thorough) and post it on the forum, but they do not post the password. We'll just have to take their word for it that they have reported the contents accurately.

If someone does get in there by resetting the password, then they can always mail the new password to Dana (and no one else), so she and her aunt can continue to use the account. Of course, the 'entities' might seize control again after that Smile

I'm of the belief that if the password or answer to the secret question is so weak that we can guess it (i.e. not full of strangely ordered letters, numbers, and symbols), then we are meant to do so. Note to PMs: Use strong passwords and secret questions on accounts that you publicize to players (and at least halfway imply that you want them to hack) if you don't want them to get in to those accounts!

My opinion is similar to Krystyn's. I really think it's a waste of time/effort to try to hack the account.

PLUS, in doing so, it apparently locks down for security reasons, effectively locking the PMs out of using the account also. Doesn't seem like a good idea.

No it only locks us out from repeated forgotten password attempts Wink

I tried but after it wasn't Farnsworth, I figured it'd be wrong.

I don't think we're supposed to hack it personally. Seems thats where the communication from the entity is going to come, and us being in there most likely will serve no purpose, other than getting everybody else's email's being sent to that address. As far as I can tell, that would be absolutely horrible of the PM's to allow that to happen. There are bozo's out there that would sell the e-mail list, especially if they are trying to reach a wider audience of X-Box players. It's something I wouldn't want to see unless it was controlled (a la Dale's e-mail in CTW, we got into it, but none of the personal emails sent there necessarily appeared).

I think (and this is purely metagame thinking), that if they wanted us to hack the address and get into it, they wouldn't have set it up on hotmail. We'd have a different address (like "danatwing@ilovebees.com") that would get us access to an internal webmail box. If they want us to break into hotmail I think that's just damned irresponsible PMing. Whoever these PMs are, they don't seem that irresponsible to me.

I would agree that if they wanted us to hack the email, they would have put it on one of their own servers. That said, here are passwords I have tried for Ladybee:

farnsworth
Farnsworth
Decker

Hack not, lest ye be judged.

Geez, here I am, posting in each of the new categories (thanks moderators) ... but since I was as strong an advocate of hacking in as anyone, I feel obliged to spread the word:

I had another brief email correspondance with Dana on this topic, and it seems clear that between what she wrote in her blog and her email reply that we are not meant to hack in there.

There. I promise not to write about it anymore.
