ARG Jobs
How to get paid, and what skills are needed

Now before I get moved, I know there have been threads similar to this one for people looking to PM and posting "resumes" and such. This is slightly different and that thread was older so I decided to start a new one with my question.

I am pretty new to ARG's but besides loving playing them I love some of the storylines. I am a writer and my favorite parts of the games are the character interaction. Once I have more puzzle experience (like Cyphers, source code, WhoIs) I am sure I will love that stuff too...

Anyway, my question is, how do I get a job with a company that produces these and do they even have jobs just for writers? I recently discovered that 42 Entertainment is down the street from my apartment and would love to seek out a job there. I am worried, however, that they require vast computer skills or that one has been involved in ARG's for years.

If anyone here has any answers or advice I'd appreciate it. Especially those that get paid to do this or are friends with those that do. Thanks!

I'm guessing a lot of them involve a degree in some sort of computer field. Of course they would like to see your experience so it is best to try and get some with a grassroots game perhaps which you can post your skills in the PM help thread.

Funny you should mention, but if you're bilingual Jane McGonigal is looking for a junior puppetmaster...if you have the skills that's a surefire way to build your resume and make connections, which seems to be a good way of entering any industry.

I believe that much of it is showing what you're capable of doing. As someone who is aspiring to get a development company off the ground, I would have to say that when hiring writers I want to find someone with experience within the genre and has shown the capability and responsibility to create and run a game. Some jobs, such as IT and programming, I would look for people with experience in those aspects moreso than experience within the genre.

I guess for the most part, if you want to work for an ARG development company - show them what you can do in whatever it is that you want to do, and you may find yourself working with someone on a game.
