Since Codeseeker's riddle is meant for InsaneFox, I'll 'spoiler' my answer:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The word 'TON" -> 1 ton = 1000 kg, so quite heavy. And reversed, it spells 'not'.

This is a good one. The answer is below... it's gotta be. It works out way too well not to be. ... So if it is, this is not a hint so DON'T LOOK if you want to figure it out alone.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
He was cheating at cards. They were bicycle playing cards and should only be 52 in a deck.
It could just as easily be referencing the king of hearts (suicide king) in a new deck of cards (with 2 jokers).

Actually, Fifty-three cards is a standard number. There is the fifty-two card deck, fifty-three one joker deck, and fifty-four two joker deck,
And, of course the answer to that one is 'Ton'

"How do you know I'm mad?" said Alice.
"You must be," said the Cat, "or you wouldn't have come here."

Was the man inside a restaurant?
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
And if yes; did he choke on a pearl?

Is the shell a seashell? (as opposed to say, an expended cartridge).

Is the shell the shell of a turtle? (or is it indeed an expended cartridge?)

Is the mint something you could eat?
And, to save having to ask it later...(It that's allowed)
Is the plate the type you eat from?
Could he be a thief, caught in the act of stealing a printing plate from the Mint, who was shot while exiting the building?
