Stay cool?

Hell no. I plan to spazz out completely in the next few weeks. I will throw off my clothes, don a Slusho hat, and run about throwing confetti shaped like tiny octopi, and hurling vile insults at anyone who harshes a trout, and then I will sing the Slusho! commercial music loudly while handing out recipe cards with nutty Japanese chefs on them.

Yep.

Keep an eye out for that.

I thought I was gonna be the only one. *hugs*

Seriously, I think uF is great, and I'm waiting to see what happens with this, my first AR* before letting more time disappear into the online realm. Sorry if I opened up a bit of a can of worms. And yeah, MikeyJ has been shortening the lead a little, and that's great. It's all about balance, and I love the low key style of moderation here.

Hey guys, sorry I've not be visible around here for a bit.

I'm not sure what RedHatty meant exactly in her post. But, speaking for myself, after pouring time and effort into this subforum for months, quite honestly I would be upset if everyone leaves after the movie opens.

I think that given the absolute lack of updates and information in this promotion, the posters in this subforum have done a great job at maintaining their sense of humor and enthusiasm for the movie. It is annoying to everyone to see the same thing over and over again, but that is what happens when nothing new is revealed. Using Search has been a headache, we've attracted the attention of a few persistent internet trolls, all that stuff tries anyone's patience.

I've been quite impressed by the people following this movie, and I don't want you to leave just because it ends.

I know that the Dark Knight (Batman) movie promotion will be continuing as will Eldridge Errors (Lovecraft anyone?) - two games that I think players from 1-18-08 would enjoy. There are other games as well, Silver Ladders is an ongoing game. And more games will be starting. I hope that people from 1-18-08 will check them out.

As for maintaining or even improving our forum behavior during these final days, I have absolute confidence in everyone who has been posting here. Sometimes it takes a while for new people to understand how unfiction works; sometimes people start new threads because they are used to doing that in other forums; sometimes people are obnoxious to others because that is how they have learned to relate in other forums. With a little patience, the people who genuinely want to participate in this community, figure it out.

Of course, the existing members of the community have a great influence on the community atmosphere. To me, it is easier to just tell someone nicely that you disagree with them or point to an existing thread that contains the same information they just posted, than it is to call them names or make them feel stupid or intimidated. To me, the point is that we need to share information and ideas, so the more people we have, the better. By just creating and maintaining a welcoming tone, we can have a major overall positive effect on the forum. We create the community that we want by the way we interact with each other.

Also, please note: Trout is not an insult. It is meant to be a polite and humorous way to tell someone, thanks for sharing, but this has been posted already. Please don't take a trout as a reason to leave the forum.

In light of recent events, the answer seems to be a big NO.

It also appears that the folks that really make up the 'insiders loop' here also don't think any of the Cloverfield fans are any good either.

<AnthraX101> that game needs a troll tag.

Rarely if ever is anything relative to the ARGs discussed there anyway.
I can't help but notice that there was a time when trout threads were locked so they would be guaranteed to drop away. I get the impression that allowing this subforum to descend further into chaos, despite the desires of many of us to have a sense of order and a productive dialog, is meant to generally drive off the bulk of people interested in Cloverfield.

There are so many forums and blogs where Cloverfield is discussed where things are and have always been far more chaotic. I think many have come here in the hopes that they could find a place where the pursuit of this mystery could have a constructive and effective dialog. It's a shame that apparently this new genre of Chaotic Fiction can not find a home in a place where you would think there are minds open enough to embrace the original idea of CF - but not this most recent variation upon it.

as the movie approaches.

Up until a week ago, uF was the one stop shop for all thing Cloverfield, with honourable mentions to CloverfieldClues.com and The Effect.

Recently the number of trolls, gamejacks, fake spoilers, and petty name calling has gone through the roof. I await all the real spoilers with some trepidation.

I'm just wondering if uF can last the next 40 days without devolving into some horrible online Lord of the Flies deal.

Gahhh!!!

Rant over, you may resume the madness.

This is not correct. No threads are being locked anywhere on unfiction- unless an admin decides to do so - this isn't a rule just for Cloverfield.

The history of the "no lock" is as follows: For a while the moderating of the unfiction forums drifted from a general "hands off" approach into using the tools of moderating as a control mechanism. To end that drift, the admins called for an end to locking threads. We know we don't need to lock threads to facilitate discussion.

So pure and simple, it has nothing to do with Cloverfield at all.

(The only rule unique to the Cloverfield subforum is the requirement that you be a member to post here. The admins were driven to add that requirement as a last resort after the subforum suffered repeated attacks.)

I really think it is completely unfair to quote two random people out of context from a chat room and ascribe what they say as being what the people at unfiction think. You don't know them, whether they are joking, or whether they are simply curmudgeons. A couple of "off the cuff" comments shouldn't be taken to describe the attitude of a community of thousands of people.

The people at unfiction are us...the 1-18-08 subforum of unfiction isn't a separate world. The thing is that if you are a forum member, you're a part of the community. I don't know how to explain it better than that.

Finally, and on topic, the subforum was reorganized - which took hours of work to identify and classify threads - solely for the purpose of making it function better as we get closer to the release of the film.

The #unfiction chat channel is like a great big lobby, lots of people moving in and out, some hanging out in the hotel bar before heading out for an evening. The conversation is fluid and random, and can be a kind of chaotic fiction of its own. Wink

And it certainly doesn't speak to the hours of effort and dedication that the mods and admins have put in to trying to make the Cloverfield subforums readable and accessible to all.

Like everything, there is a learning curve here, and the great flood of new people that Cloverfield brought in made things tough for a while, but we've tried to treat it like we treat any other game/campaign/topic that gets discussed here.

One or two people's personal opinions should certainly not be taken as any kind of statement as to Unfiction's position on the matter.
