UPDATED: Posting Guidelines *Please read before posting!*

As this puzzle develops, it has proved useful in past games to have standard guidelines for posts and discussion. First, read what has come before or use the Search feature, to see if what you are about to post has already been shared. Then, help us keep the site well organized by following the conventions of the forum.

Help with the Search function

As this mystery gets deeper and deeper, it is helpful to remember a useful section of the Search Utility.
Search

Has a section called Display results as:
with two choices: Posts Topics

The Search tool now defaults to "Posts", which I find easier to Search for then "Topics."
That way, if the word you are looking for is in the middle of a 12 page Topic, you don't have to wade through all the pages of a Topic. Searching by Posts will take you directly to that Post.

--------------------------------------------

Redundant posts may get removed, at the discretion of the moderators.
---------------------------------------------

In order to keep things as organized as possible, here are some general tips for posting...

Thread/post titles (or what should I title my post?)

The best title is something that is descriptive and informative. A title like "Look what I found..." doesn't indicate what the subject of the thread is going to be. A title like "[UPDATE] New ingame site - www.example.com" is much better.

Forum Types (or where do I put my post?)

If you are posting in one of the major ARG forums (ilovebees, Urban Hunt, etc.) you have four subforums to choose from...

General/Updates - Discuss general game information and site/game updates. Note: if a puzzle is included in a site update, further discussion of the puzzle should take place in the Puzzle forum

Quick Reference - Catalog information about sites, characters, and events here. This forum is for reference, not discussion.

Interaction - List interaction you've had with game characters, locations, and events here, including email, telephone and in-person contact.

Puzzles - Catalog puzzles and their solutions here. All puzzle discussion should be here.

Why shouldn't I just post whatever I want on the first thread I see? (or why do I keep getting told I'm posting in the wrong place?)

The key to being an effective team is to stay organized. No one wants to waste their time on a puzzle that has already been solved in another thread. Nor does anyone want to read about the same update 23 times in different threads. By keeping the discussions focused we can be a more effective team and we can have more fun!

----------------------------------------

It is strongly suggested that these principles be applied when talking about aspects of this game:

Topic Headers
GUIDELINES for moderation:

  • LABELS. Your subject MUST begin with a label, specifying the category in which it is being posted.
  • RELEVANCE. Your post should tell us something we may not have thought of or realized before.
  • CLARITY. If your post is ill-written or hard to understand, we will ask you to change it.

EXAMPLES OF LABELS:

  • NEW - New in-game website, phone number, or e-mail from the game.
  • UPDATE - Use this when an in-game web site, voicemail number or e-mail autoresponder has changed its content. (DO NOT POST OLD NEWS USING "NEW" OR "UPDATE"!!!)
  • SPEC - Speculation. You think your post might be right, and some evidence supports your view, but the point is not conclusive.
  • QUESTION - Use this label when you have a factual game-related question which you are fairly certain that the group can answer, or for answers to other QUESTIONs.
  • OFFTOPIC or OT - This post is totally unrelated to the game. Posts like this can actually go elsewhere, because of the diverse sections of Unforums.
  • TRIVIA - Facts about the game which COULD be relevant, but which, as far as you can tell, probably aren't.
  • HUMOR - A post which is teh funny.
  • PUZZLE - A post about game-related puzzles, passwords, UAMs, credit numbers, voicemail codes, etc. If you know the answer, add the word SOLUTION to your subject as well.
  • SOURCE - Analysis of the HTML source code underlying game-related pages.
  • META - Discussions of what the moderators are doing wrong, new labels we should use, how people ought to play the game, or about the Unforums organization generally.
  • ANNOUNCE - Announcements. You probably shouldn't use this unless you're announcing a Trail update or something like that. DON'T use this for game news/updates!
  • FLAME - Replies to a stupid post.
  • TROUT - The polite response to a redundant or factually false post. The word "trout" is a term of respect. Read about it here

You should use multiple labels, when appropriate. For example, speculation as to how to solve a login puzzle should go into SPEC/PUZZLE. (Of course, it's unlikely that any such discussion is relevant any longer, but that's how you'd label it under the current system.)

If you don't want to read any UF humor, you don't have to. That's what the labels are for.

Don't make up new labels unless you really feel like none of the earlier labels are at all applicable. We're going to be more likely to edit your post if you made up your label.

SUBJECTIVITY AND CENSORSHIP
Yes, the final guideline, "Moderator's preference," is subjective. Maybe we ARE refusing to post your stuff just because we have a personal grudge against you. We have the full right to do so, which we will try to wield with responsibility and tact. Sometimes we will fail. When we do, you should flame us *mercilessly*.

---------------------------------------------

And also, do not forget that the Unforum Terms of Service are always applicable to this forum.

Thanks, and enjoy your stay.

Please also bracket your topic labels in []. This allows for easy searching based on a thread subject.

IE:
[NEW] In-game website - www.google.com
[SPEC] Is jeremy really cole's father?
or
[PUZZLE] Which came first, Chicken/egg?

Thanks!
