^ Not to fan any flames, but if it was really aimed at a totally adult crowd, why were trailers attached to Transformers and Beowulf? ._.

Eh, there's no way to whitewash it: PG-13 is a HORRIBLE choice for this movie.

The marketing and previews and everything else were geared towards a very adult audience, replete with lots of story/backstory references involving sex, drugs, booze (in copious quantities), VD, swingin' and lots of other stuff that many 13-year olds would barely understand. Add to that scenes of violence that hint(ed) at a VERY graphic nature, and the movie had "R" written all over it. As well it should have.

The ONLY reason to slap a PG-13 in it is to let kids in. This is NOT the kind of movie I'd like to take my 5-year old son to, and I hope to god all of you realize that you should be thinking along those same lines.

JJ SERIOUSLY needs to throw some more f-bombs and a full-frontal crotch shot or two to scare the MPAA into an "R" rating real quick, or else this is turning into a major disaster.

"PG-13," hell.

The fact that you want a whole bunch of f-bombs and penis pictures scares me.

It is HIGHLY unlikely the rating will change, but hell, it's happened before.

Fair enough question, but one that misunderestimates (Bushism) the total audience of those movies.

"Beowulf" was seen by kids, teens, AND grownups. Yes, it's a good animated actioner, but it's also MORE famous for being required reading in boring old Medieval Lit 101 courses in college and/or college-prep high school English classes. So that means a LOT of the audience was comprised of college students/grads/professors.

And "Transformers" -- keep in mind that TF appealed to SEVERAL generations. Not just the kids, but also the kids' DADS (present company included), who grew up with the ORIGINAL line and have been patiently awaiting a live-action Optimus Prime for nigh on 25 years. Wink

I'm trying to find a positive outlook on this, and I can't.

It seems like all PG-13 movies are indeed aimed at preteens, and R movies are aimed at actual young adults. I just pray to the almighty flying spaghetti monster that this will not be the former. I don't want to go in there and leave feeling like my intelligence has been insulted, or embarassed. I want a story that actually takes a reasonable amount of knowledge to understand. I want to be able to watch this movie multiple times, and each time notice something new about the story. The movie 'Clue' did this, while it was rated PG and provided some good entertainment for the kiddies, it had a very mature story that took a lot of knowledge to understand... and I still love watching it because of that reason. I hope Cloverfield can manage to do something similar, and not just have a generic storyline I've come to expect from PG-13 movies.

I figured that, yeah, but they were both PG13 (though I've heard Beowulf was supposed to be R?), and most everyone seems to be ttly bashing that rating. :B

Actually, I was thinking more of rugshots, not penis. But hey.

And it's not a matter of *wanting* curse words and gore, it's a matter of *expecting* them. This movie/marketing campaign has prided itself on ultra-realism to the point that the film could easily be classified as cinema verite or docudrama...

...so to leave out the splatterfest you'd *expect* from exploding bodies, meat-chomping monstrosities, collapsing skyscrapers and a full-fledged war in the streets....as well as the coarse language you'd *expect* from a bunch of 20something drunks, stoners and slutpuppies (not to mention SOLDIERS Rolling Eyes )...would push the meter back towards UNrealism, wouldn't you think?

I think Dennis has evidence

Dennis what was the registration date and whois info? I was under the impression that it was registered late and was under speculation for a future gamejack. Could the "cyber squatter" just be throwing out a PG rating, I swear I remember this site not being verified legit. I mean that summery and now this rating... I smell poo.

God, this is what gives this subforum a bad name. The website has been proven as official. Don't question every little single thing unless you've been given proper provocation to. It's PG-13. Not R. Get over it.

The soldier's face was blurred in the trailer; maybe whomever found the tape(s) and released it did some editing (bleeps, blurs, et al)? And then we'll get like a super special awesome uncut ridiculously extended version on DVD (all seven hours!). :/

Yeah, goes back to "expectations," though -- nobody went into "Transformers" or "Beowulf" with an ad campaign that promised exploding bodies, drunken debauchery, biological warfare, man-eating monsters and mind-altering drugs, either. Wink That's the bill of sale that JJ has given us over the past few months, and now he's trying to water down the whiskey.

This is the best defense I've read on here so far for an "R" rating.

Good points, all of them. Here's hoping JJ comes to his senses.

Here's a quote from someone on IMDB:

Quote:
Yeah so mister i saw the movie is faking it all. Also this cant be Pg-13
Cying blood? Tottly R or maybe its like whenever gore happenes it gets all ugly and pixelated
Like for the tanksgiving trailer. they put certain spots that didn't make it nc 17

Someone needs to help those people...

AHAHAHHAHAHA
I wrote that
Im not even kidding
Look at the user name
I just joined unfiction so i could put this comment
And i was a little messed up
Bt actually they'll just pixelate all the gory shit.
Because for the oral sex scene in the faux-trailer for Thankgiving they just put some age spots in specific locations so it became implied instead of shown
So maybe for exploding people they just make it all shifty blurry pixelated( i mean in the sense it gets all distorted like robs speaking to the camera at the beginning NOT like the soldier's face
