Player Interaction Question

I am working on developing a small scale game in my town. Now, at the moment, this game is just being made for fun.

The rabbit-hole is going to be big enough where me and a bunch of my friends are going to go around during the giant townwide festival passing out flyers, in costume, with the games website on it. And since it is on a restricted scale i know to use that to my advantage with town attractions, etc.

However, my problem is, since the audience is people who have probably never played and ARG before. Im sure I will get players but how exactly would i lead them to find each other. since most of them dont know to find a forum like uF to help each other. How can i give them a way to interact with each other without it being ingame is basically my question.

That would seem like the easy way to do it but wouldnt it hurt the storyline if i put an OOG forum about the game on the in game website?

I don't really see that as a concern. If you look at a lot of the games aiming at a mainstream audience that used in-game forums (Art of the Heist, Cathy's Book, Chain Factor, and many more I'm obviously forgetting) it worked out without heads exploding or somesuch.

If you want to trust the community to come up with a solution, I'm sure there are all sorts of Yahoo Groups, listservs, forums, and live-meetups that could be used. But no, I don't think having game-sponsored forums will "ruin" the game and immersive aspects of the story unless you're inconsistent with how you treat those forums. If you want it to be an out of game resource, leave it alone. If you want it to be an in-game resource, figure out a way to set boundaries that your target community are comfortable with.

Create the forum under the guise of a player-made community? Maybe set up a Google Group, and have the "founder" just pretend to be a player.
