JAWS was rated PG-13 and is considered in many circles a classic suspensful and SCARY monster movie. F-bombs and gore do not necessarily a classic monster movie make.

Excellent argument. I am actually still terrified of sharks. When I went on the ride at Universal, I had flashbacks from the movie. Scared me to pieces. That kind of interaction is kind of like an ARG...

Actually, I think I feel better about it not being an R-rated movie. Think about something like Snakes on a Plane that went out of its way to be R-rated with gratuitous violence and nudity. Sure, it was great in a way that only bad action flicks with Samuel L. Jackson can be great, but that's not what I'm expecting from Cloverfield.

I want something different from run of the mill teen screamers. I think Cloverfield pointed AWAY from that when the established characters weren't in high school or even college. They're young adults with functioning lives and careers. This is gonna try to be a mature monster movie. I look forward to it.

Besides, I don't think you ought to be taking your five year old to a PG-13 rated movie anyway. It's parental guidance under THIRTEEN. Jesus. My kid sister would have nightmares for a week. But that'a a rant for another day.

I still think the first Jurassic Park was awesome and it wasn't R rated, for cripes sake it featured a lawyer getting eaten by T-Rex, and Wayne Knight being devoured by some spitting abomination. Totally awesome, I was about 14 when that came out and it scared the bejesus out of me. Every once in awhile I still think there's a velicoraptor in my closet. So to all the naysayers who can't live without entrails and titties I say: Go see something else if it bothers you that much. There was no way in hell this was going to be R-rated.

You guys have to understand, while PG-13 is bad for us, most movies push heavily for PG-13 ratings just so that kids can go see the film so that the film can make more money. That's why many PG-13 movies get away with a lot of stuff. Did you guys know that Transformers was suppose to be rated R? Spielberg argued against it because the movie could catch the adult audience that wanted the action as well as the kid audience that recognize the name "Transformers". And it worked. Transformers made about $319 million. So I'm sure they intentionally made Cloverfield to be PG-13.

Yeah, that's why JJ is releasing the movie in january, the biggest month for box office hits.

EXACTLY! You don't get it? All the big box office movies come out in the summer. So why let the movie sit and fight with other huge movies like The Chronciles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (May 16), and Indiana Jones (May 22), and The Dark Knight (June 18 )??? This campaign can only reach so many people compared to the million and millions of dollars that go out for other movie's public campaigns. So it's logical to release Cloverfield in a dead box office month. It's the biggest thing going on.

Oh i get it. I don't think you understand how little money movies that come out in january get. Competing with other movies during the summer would make more movie than coming out in january, a time when no one wants to spend money.

Righteo, January is typically the month that serves as the dumping ground for crap, which is why the marketing for this film was so important. January's got nothing on summer and Christmas as far as blockbuster releases. Award fodder comes at the end of the year, generally, no one remembers January come Oscar time. Smile

Not in a million years, I was just trying to further backup the point made before about Jan. being a film dumping ground, that's all. Smile

Maybe they just wrote the script to feature a January monster attack, and then came up with the real-time/date angle later?

Anyways, as for profanity laden exclamations being normal for a real-life situation, I think I have to bring up 9/11. Granted the TV stations would have censored swearing, but I think the norm for that day was more slack-jawed expressions of shock and slow and quiet mutterings of "Oh...My...God...". People did swear, but it didn't come out to be something like "Holy &$*#@ *&^#$ #$^*&@ !@^&%^%". One expletive at the most...I don't think you really have the capability for coming up with words to match the utter helplessness you feel in such a situation. Profanity is for car accidents and youth delinquents. Terrorist attacks and monster rampages deserve a whole new vocabulary. So no, excess swearing does not equal realism. In real life, I think people would be crying for their mothers first, rather than dropping the F-Bomb.

My thoughts exactly. I'm not sure where this (profanity==realism) train of thought comes from, but I know for myself I could thoroughly enjoy this movie even if it had zero curse words. I mean, when I saw the trailer and became hopelessly hooked it wasn't because I saw it and thought "Wow, clearly this movie will have an endless stream of profanity and cursing of all manner, the hallmark of any great film". Rolling Eyes I associate profanity more with anger than with terror, anyway.

The sense of realism came because we experienced the shock and surprise of the attack in the same way the characters did. We didn't have the typical monster movie build up where we knew evil was building up somewhere, marching fatefully towards the city, culminating in silly scenes of people being warned that "The monster is coming, the monster is coming, evacuate the city!". Instead, our thoughts were the same as the partygoers in the trailer. The roar and shaking were totally unexpected and baffling. We were as confused as they were. The handheld camera point-of-view also keeps it real, since we don't get sweeping aerial views of the attack underway that give us God-like awareness of the big picture; we just see what they see (actually, even less since we can't look around beyond the camera the way the characters can). In my opinion, that's what will make it cool and different. Not a Scarface-like stream of f-bombs.

Im not convinced that cloverfieldmovie.com is a Paramount website.

Dennis what was the registration date and whois info? I was under the impression that it was registered late and was under speculation for a future gamejack. Could the "cyber squatter" just be throwing out a PG rating, I swear I remember this site not being verified legit. I mean that summery and now this rating... I smell poo.

Stop looking for excuses to make this the R movie you dreamed of.

It's PG-13 guys. Get over it, go see it, like it.

Assumption there Oli. I don't care if it R,PG or PG-13 never said I did.
No matter what it's rated I will go see it, and I hope I like it! Very Happy

God, this is what gives this subforum a bad name. The website has been proven as official. Don't question every little single thing unless you've been given proper provocation to. It's PG-13. Not R. Get over it.

I believe something else gives this subforum a bad name... Rolling Eyes

Thank you for the info! Cool
But in This thread I thought even you believed we had a squatter.

Well, yes, I always think it's a "squatter" until an official site points to it.

And, geez, that was a month ago... I don't remember what I said yesterday.
