[QUESTION] [META] What does SPLAT mean in a post?

so sorry if this is a bit off of topic, as in it really doesn't have much/anything to do with cloverfield, but it has been driving me crazy.

In a lot of the posts regarding websites and emails on here the word SPLAT is in like every email address.

sorry if i sound stupid but this is my first experience with an arg/are and so if this is just lingo for privacy's sake than please let me know. sorry again for the stupid question.

to make it up to you for reading this thread i will give you a head's up for the funniest cloverfield vid that i have seen. it is " the nostalgia critic" doing his review of the teaser, it is classic, just bear in mind that it was made within like a week of the teaser coming out. warning there is some very strong language used in this video.

A more appropriate Subjec title and tag for this thread would be:

[QUESTION] What does SPLAT mean in a post?

To answer your question directly - it's a means to thwart the email bots that comb the internet for addresses. Hoping to keep any posted email addys out of the spammers hands.

If you use the @ sign in an email (Shift-2), it automatically changes that sign to a SPLAT when you post.
