IF that's supposed to be a barking dog, someone messed up the sound mixing... my top tip is that it is a joke, and its a x-mas hohoho, slowed down to sound evil and monstrous.

Every time I listen to it, I hear a dog barking. I wanted to hear laughing but I don't. To me it sounds like a dog barking off in the distance a little bit. And it is echoed some. Like it was in an alley between tall buildings.

You're going to be real busy soon. Why are you posting on message boards?

That's largely because it's a dog barking. The "laughing monster" is just another version of Demon Hair, OMG IT'Z 1 WOMANZ, It's Just Smoke in the Trailer, Chud's Description of the Trailer is Fake, etc., etc., etc.

I have a very solid sound system, and when the first video came out, I heard "it's alive, it's huge!" the first time. I NEVER thought they said it's a lion. It was clear as day to me. And this time, I heard a laugh. I thought "it laughs? weird..." But it seemed pretty clear to me.

Get better sound systems! Razz

I'll listen more when I get home tho.. but it did not sound like a dog barking, whatsoever. Some of you hearing dogs.. do you have prologic/dolby surround sound systems? Just wondering what people are listening through.

Its not a Dog
ROAR!!

I have upgraded sound card and speakers... played it loud several times for my friends and they all agree its not a dog... they all said sounds like laughter....

laughter would mean it was enjoying itself, which would mean its smart...

An effective test to eliminate the debate between "it's what we want to hear" and "it's obviously laughter" is to play the audio file to someone who has NO interest in cloverfield, and instead of asking

"Do you hear laughter, or a dog barking?"

ask

"what do you hear after the roar, after the guy says oh shit?"

I tried. Sent link to a few people on MSN and asked.

"After the roar there's a man speaking, then its a sound before the next man speaks. What would you decribe the sound like?"

I got 5 replies:

Frankenstein in the labratory!
Some sort of rumbling.
Laughter, like the guy in beowulf?
Not sure, sounds like a sound-effect, not natural... creepy
Coughing or something?

Okay, only one said Laughter (not sure about the frankenstein-thing... I messed up by asking "like laughter?". Thus biased data) but more importantly: No one thought it sounded like a dog barking.

Okay, two more tested on:

Theme park ride?
Some sort of horn, like a bus... Traffic?
[21:44] <Franny> is it like a devil or something
[21:44] <Franny> like a sinister laugh

After I had explained why I asked, another in the chatroom listened on the sound, and though it was some sort of barking sound.

I listened twice and heard a dog both times. The first time was before I read anything and the second time was after reading that people heard laughter. Still heard a dog. I'll have to ask my girlfriend when she gets home.
