HUMOR: Glass Day To: pdobbsSPLAT aglauranj.org
Subject: Glass Day
Mayor Dobbs:
As you are well aware from my numerous e-mails to you and your staff, I am a proud Aglaura citizen who loves nothing more than to wax nostalgic about the fine history of our wonderful treasure of a town. It is because of my love for Aglaura that I bring to you my latest proposition...
GLASS DAY!
Though the days of the Lebanon Glass Works are long gone, their legacy is still found in the hearts of every Aglaura townsperson. It is on the shoulders of this very transparent history that we are able to stand tall today. So why not a holiday to commemorate the versatile product to which we owe so much...glass!
Imagine if you will...children walking through rows of booths holding their Glass Day balloons and wearing their "We Kick Glass" t-shirts while their parents roam through dealer's booths filled with glass figurines, window furnishings and intricate mirrors. Families watching interesting glass-blowing demonstrations together while they wait for the "History of Glass" exhibit to begin. Long-time residents taking tours through the deserted glass-making villages of Lebanon Forest.
I envision that the festivities would end with the unveiling of a crowning achievement: a life-size glass statue of Jacob Ong, standing proudly in the center of the town. A tear comes to my eye just thinking about this marvelous spectacle.
Mayor Dobbs, I beseech you, give my idea more of a chance than you gave my Hat Festival. A day like this could truly bring our small town together in ways that neither of us can imagine.
Sincerely,
Scott Handelman

Glass Day Somehow, I'm glad I was absent when the development of this idea came up...
Care to explain?

Yeah, um, should this be labeled "HUMOR:" or was the hilarity completely unintentional?

Here's the speedy reply I received:
To: Scott Handelman <schandelman@vassar.edu>
Subject: Re: Glass Day
Hello again Scott,
You know, you may just have something this time.
Like a serious chemical imbalance or something. No really, Glass Day? Do you
realize it was those bastards from the Lebanon Glass Works that just about
buried this whole area for generations? Maybe I need to check into what our
school's History classes are teaching.
OK, sorry, I'm not trying to be rude but I've had a very stressful few days. If
you're seriously interested in helping out with some town festivities though,
how about getting involved with the St. Patrick's Day Parade? I think they're
still looking for a volunteer to wear the leprechaun suit.
Your mayor,
Pat

My reply:
Esteemed Mayor Dobbs:
I'm sorry that you do not share my vision, or my opinion that without the Lebanon Glass Works, Aglaura would be a shadow of the town it is today. I remember my grandfather Yitzhak Handelman telling me of his grandfather, of the stories he would tell about that old factory. Like the steam pipe explosion which trapped 15 workers and how the rest banded together to save the victims like true American heroes. Or the roof collapse that would have killed the foreman if a quick thinking machine operator hadn't pushed him out of the way.
Or the fire in 1857 which claimed the lives of 8. Or the infestation of kitten-sized rats in '58.
It's stories like these that remind us of what a great town this has always been and always will be!
I would appreciate it if you gave my idea just a bit more thought; I was a bit put off by your hasty reply.
Thank you for your offer to partake in the festivities on St. Patrick's Day. I must, however, decline, as I already have plans on that day.

Here's the mail I sent (the mayor said that donuts were welcome if you stopped by for a visit)...
Mayor Dobbs,
I am planning to visit your fine town of Aglaura, NJ this summer. Since you said that your door is always open to visitors, I was wondering what kind of donuts you like? Krispy Kreme maybe?
Varin
And here's the response I got (not much help to the game, but still kinda funny)
Hello Michelle:
Actually, some Krispy Kreme Donuts would be very welcome right about now! You really have no idea.

Krispy Kreme And if one of those donuts had a lot of globby icing AND someone had taken a bite out of it...it would look like the graffitti on the side of the library.
Anyone want to photoshop up a pic of that and send it to the mayor?

I Gave In Dear Mayor Dobbs:
My plans seem to have fallen through for St. Patrick's Day. Unbeknownst to me, you need a *license* to pilot a skywriting jet.
Oh well, maybe next year.
Anyway, as I was saying, I am suddenly left without anything to do. Does your leprechaun offer still stand?
