[SPEC] Why the entity chose ilovebees This came to me the other day on the drive home, but I haven't been able to post it until now.
I think one of the reasons "The Operator" chose to invade a site about bees was to contact us.
All the hidden text seems to be different people, or even different facets of the same entity. So in order to get help, this entity realized it can not appeal to a single person for help. It needed something that could think like it does. Multiple points of view coming to form a whole. It needed a hive intellect, or as we'd call it, a collective dectective. (Laia did point out that we, infact had become an A.I at the end of the Beast, due to the well of information each of us drew from to get to the solution.)
Any thoughts on this?

My theories? The bees are a red herring.
Note that The Operator seems quite unwillingly 'shipwrecked' here, and has made no reference to bees itself. In fact, it seems blind - unable to see anything but 'sand' (silicon? base data?), wounded, confused and scared.
I just get a feeling that we're focusing on the wrong metaphors. The metaphorical writings of The Operator itself (see the 'Widows Journey' story on Wikipedia, combined with page 2 of the 'analyzing the computer text' thread here) seem far more important.
Just my theory though.

I think (hopefully I'm right) that this won't be an entire ARG about bees. And it remains to be seen if this is directly related to Halo, but the hive mind or collective mind comparison may prove to be intentional.

bees I'm new at this, so feel free to disregard, but perhaps bees is an acronym, B.E.E.S. or B.E.E.'s... biological extraterrestrial entity for example?

I'd also like to point out that there ARE references to instects in The Widows Journey story.
However, those insects are fireflies (a metaphor for network nodes?) and 'The Pious Flea', hiding from sight (have no idea what this is, but I think it may play a larger part later).
No bees though.

The connection with bees goes as far as allowing a neat way to bring ARG owners into the fold. That and give us a good group name (beekeepers). I agree with the speculation that there is no further connection here since none of the Game text mentions anything about bees.

I came over here from the Halo.Bungie.Org site, and i must say, it's quite a forum you have.
The big thing going around over there is that these are A) the Cortana letters for Halo2. i have no idea waht this means, but it's supposed to be read into very deeply and give info about the game, bungie has been know for doing stuff like this...
B) While these are believed to be the "Cortana Letters" for Halo 2, they are not from her. The two main speculations are that they are from ether James, a spartan that survived the glassing of Reach (Read the books out, not actualy in the game) or they are from captain keyes, well, the flood form that absorbed Captain keys and has now survived.. Both of these theories bring up exciting possibilities for the game. That ether they're would be more spartains, or that the Flood would return. There is a line on one of the apges that says "This is the Law, and the whole law" or something like that. Now the spartans had a rule not to leave anyone behind(books again) so therefore, this would point to James, since he would know this. But it could also point to keys, because the one law the binds everything is "Survival of the fittest" meaning the flod, since almost nothing can stop them..
Just some thoughts

From that link:
"So when's the shipping date? Matt replied:
"The End of the World."
From Aunt Margaret's CafePress shop:
"The end of the World is upon us! I wont be selling these items after Aug 24th due to the BEE's."
Is this a rehash of the end of the world reference? Is August 24th the shipping date for HALO 2?

I wouldn't draw any inferences from the CafePress shop; it's validity is very much in question right now. I personally think it's fake; the art style doesn't match Bungie/MS apparel at all and all the text is either directly copied from the ilovebees site or is not in the same writing style as any of the other characters. The message is also too obvious and blunt. There is also no link from the prime site to the shop.
In short, it pegs my bogometer. Don't place any orders there.

Oh for heaven's sake. NOT MARGARET'S SHOP. Jeez. You think Margaret made shirts with some halo thing on the back? Please.
Cafepress has been used in previous ARGs for fun and amusement to make souvenirs for players. Never pretended to be in-game. Colin (a UF member) has one now too, openly, and offers to put the proceeds into the community (ask Space about sudden spikes in bandwidth demands). Don't shop with mystery trolls.

I dont think the bees are red herrings, as throughout the website a whole range of insects are mentioned ie winged ant, bees, spiders, pious flea, fly.
I believe the author is defining the insects as a lower order of life, less intelligent, whereas the queen, widow, princess are all higher more intelligent forms of life, maybe AI.

As of right now, there is not enough evidence to call the bees important or not.
I'm trying not to assume too much with this, I think that assumptions close the mind to other possibilities.
