..and Bobby isn't done with me yet.
I'm working the angle to see if he will consider me as an ally with some degree of power---possibly work me in as someone storywise so that I can milk information for us here. After my last caustic RP email, I intimated that I was a Nephillim---one of the offspring of the first generation of Angels and a human--it's in the Old Testament---there are a ton of clues in the last two posts as to that. I've not given up any of our code or that I'm even assoicated with the safehouse. I thought I was shut out til this morning when I got this. Heres the whole message chain from Gmail.

The question is what can I do to help?
I'm not a lapdog begging for scraps--being who and what I am I have resources. If you could have one thing done, or one message delivered, or one curtain pulled---what would it be. As you said, I do not speak like the others because I am not like the others.

Just another avenue to consider, Grey is generally the English spelling of the word as opposed to the American Gray. As for "old Bill" if we follow the trail through England, there's no shortages of William's to look through, most notably King William IV who was known as old Bill and coincidently is where the previously mentioned slang for police came from. Nothing more on that, just a trail I've been looking at.

Also like jjocke said, Bill doesn't necessarily have to be a name, it could refer to something else such as a Law. I looked into John, Law and Bible, and came up with 1 John 2:7 which says "Brethren, I write no new commandment unto you, but an old commandment which ye had from the beginning. Finally along with the spelling of Grey we can also consider alternate meanings like phulkrum suggested. Grey can also mean things such as foggy or unclear.

I know it's a lot of throwing stuff against the wall to see what sticks, but hopefully it can get someone on the right path because I'm about out of ideas for now...

Gideon I do not know who sent you, but if you are sided with me then you understand that more involvement here on the forefront of the war I wage is Ill advised. Your persistence though has shown me you are willing to help, although in the future I would check your condescending tone. I am not a prideful thing, but I would have your respect at the least.

So that being said, pray tell, what sort of resources do you have? You may be a good candidate to watch over the fool mortals that have gotten themselves mixed up in this. Currently they solve Falthis's first challenge. Perhaps your resources can help them with that.

I understand your caution but recognizing allies has always been your weak spot. I know of the group of Adam's kin that you speak of, though they would scarcely count me among their number. My ears are open, my hands are unbound. Speak, and it shall be done. If my gifts come into play with them, you will know it because it will not read like schoolchildren begging to lick the teacher's arse.

Been lurking for a bit, but it's probably too late to actually get in the game. I was helping another member on here but decided it would be easier to post on my own account.

Don't forget: "The answer to this challenge is not only the answer, but the question to which it responds."

So the original riddle might not be so forward... it could be as easy as rearranging it to "What would old Bill consider as John Grey?" or something much more complicated.

Okay, a stretch here, there is a William Tyndale (possible Old -testament- & Bill) that was the first to translate the books of the old testament from Hebrew to English. He was hunted down and burned at the stake. He was a protestant reformer, opposed to the King's divorce(Henry VIII's) and opposed John Bell who was on the side of the King and also studied both sides of the fence as it were -Protestant and Catholic.
Grasping at straws, but there connections can be made if you squint.

The references to 'old Bill' and 'John as Grey' reminded me of a ballad by William (old Bill?) Thackeray. It's quite long, but here are the first few verses:

THE KNIGHT AND THE LADY.

You can find the rest of the ballad here, about halfway down the page. The ballad tells the story of Sir John, who invites a woman, her daughter and the daughter's fiance to come and stay with him, and how he gets robbed for his hospitality.
