In the comments section of the web form I mentioned Mythbusters.
I did a quick search for her name on the Mythbusters forum, but didn't turn up anything. I'll ask her more about it.

I heard back from the webmaster (or should I say webmistress?) who appears to be someone named Amanda Graves. When I asked to be signed up to the list I mentioned an urban legend that, as a joke, a friend of mine and I had tried to give birth to amongst our circle of friends. Here was her response:

I assume this email is not an autoresponse, but let me know if anyone else has gotten the exact same email.

I wrote her back informing her about dreadhouse.com, saying that it was possible one of her other "Urban Myths" was not actually so mythical after all. Makes sense that she would want to know, given the updated link re: the dream project.

Check your spam box as well, my reply ended up in there.

Dear Heather,

Thanks for your interest in www.urbanmythology.net. I have also heard that story about the Las Vegas casinos, and sometimes wonder if people heard about the company that was contracted to pump the scents into the casinos and various shows (I believe the TI pirate show used to have a pina colada smell) and somehow assumed they added oxygen in as well. I'd like to include your submission in a future webpage update.

I collect information from many different places; I can't say just how I
came across the Dread House story.

I'll put your e-mail address on the list for notification when the site is

Below is the result of your feedback form.

name: heather

referrer: Strange turn of events led me here after putting in an
application to be part of a new reality show.

legend: Most people agree that the Las Vegas casinos pump oxygen into the air in order to keep people awake and gambling all night long. The truth is that lack of outside lighting cues, no clocks, and no direct pathways to the front doors coupled with natural adrenaline from the excitement associated with gambling is what keeps people up late.

comments: Your site is very intriguing, but I wonder how you heard about
the reality show "Dread House". I can not find any mention of it on any other urban myth sites.

Dear Justin,

The Dream Projector legend is a fairly new one. It had actually been
sent in by a woman calling herself "California", and in a bid to have
something original on my site, I put it up. True or not, it was interesting.
After that, the link to the site was sent to me anonymously, but I was
curious enough to check it out. I emailed them, but have yet to hear back.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

It's a fun legend though isn't it, to think someone could actually
record what you see when you're sleeping?

Sincerely,
Amanda Graves

Dear Dishboy,

At this point I do not have anything more about Dread House that I am able
to share with you. Hopefully the increased traffic to my website lately
will stir more details out of the woodwork.

Thank you for the nice words!

Dear Lindsay,

Thanks for your interest in www.urbanmythology.net. Very interesting legend you sent! I would like to include it on my site.

So I guess in this case the "creepy" guy was really the hero because he was trying to rescue the woman from the killer in her car. They do say no good deed goes unpunished.

I'll put your e-mail address on the list for notification when the site is
updated.

My original submission:
Quote:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
name: Lindsay Mills

referrer: did a little digging at urbanhunt.com

legend: Happened in my home town years ago before we moved in. A
carnival is held every year, and there's always been the same man working one of the game booths - very creepy with a bum leg and deformities all over his face. As one of the woman workers of the carnival was walking to her car one night after they had closed, the creepy guy followed her trying to get her to come to his car with her. She told him to get away from her, but he persisted that she come with him to his car. She started running from him, but surprisingly he kept pace with her. Scared, the woman took a can of mace out of her purse, sprayed the man and sprinted to her car. She was in such a panic that she didn't notice the man hiding in the back seat of her car with a knife.

comments: Dread House is fascinating, would love to hear more about it.

My response:
Quote:
Hi Amanda,
Wow, I wasn't expecting to hear back from you so soon, thank you. By all means please use the 'legend' on your site. The man actually still works at the carnival every year or so, and the rumours spread around town every time they come back. That's what you get for living in a tiny town where everyone knows everyone else's gossip.

How long have you been working on your site? Do you verify the legends
that people send in to you as to whether they actually happened or not? I got curious and found a site covering the Dread House reality show that you mention in This Weeks myths (www.dreadhouse.com) and from the looks of it, it's not a rumour at all. Kind of creepy if you ask me Smile

Her response:
Quote:
Dear Lindsay,

I feel kind of sorry for the poor guy who works at the carnival. I imagine
he's tired of hearing the same old stories every year.

I really only got the site up and going around May, I think. I've been
interested in urban legends for quite some time and kept getting mailed new items by well-meaning friends and family, and I would collect the ones they sent me and put them up on a page for my own reference. I decided to spruce up my own hobby page and put it out there on display. I don't verify them - there are other sites out there who do a much better job at that than I could - but I do like interesting variations on stories, preferably with dark twists. Kind of like the Dread House story.

Stay well,
Amanda Graves
