[POLL] Where do you fall with swag?

Okay, quick background - I'm working on the launch of a long-form ARG, and while there currently aren't any earth-shattering expenses worked in (no 100,000 pound prize, no NIN concert, etc.), just due to the length, which is currently indefinite, I'm looking at wracking up a fair tab. There's no "central product" tied into it (i.e. no membership fees to play, no comic book with clues, no random puzzle cards for the hell of it).

At this point, I'm not concerned with making this a commercial money-making venture, but I would like to try to minimize some of the hosting, content, etc. costs. My plan was to sell merchandise, mainly apparel, which makes sense in-game.

The apparel won't contain any hidden codes, but it will breech the reality gap, and I've had our artist do up some sketches of shirt designs, and the designs look awesome.

When responding to this poll, I'm hoping to determine where players would stand on purchasing swag from a game. Please, in addition to responding, add any comments you would like.

Well, it depends if it's a high-quality shirt or not. Something from CafePress--where most of the money goes to them, not the PM--I am less likely to buy. A nice screen-printed shirt that, bought in bulk, costs only $10-$12 (and could be sold above that, from $15-$20), most definitely.

I'm in about the same boat ation... long term grassroots, with very slim pickings for generating revenue. I voted as soon as possible, with the same above criteria --- it'd have to be a good shirt.

Fortunately I'll be loosing free some of my cash for this game (thanks to wife thinking I'm saving up to buy her something - mwuahahaha oh woops!) so I've been looking at a bunch of those options as well. Talking with local screen printers, you can probably do a shirt for about 8 or 9 dollars a pop if you buy the shirts in bulk. I think I had actually found a place where I could get a few hundred at 1.70 a shirt then 6 to print the logo. The biggest problem with it being a small budget grassroots is that you don't know how many players you would have or how many would be interested in the shirts... I'm planning on giving quite a few away at some point in time, which if players like the quality of it then others may be intrigued to buy (especially if they like the game and know that the proceeds from the shirt will be used directly on the game)

One of the things that influences my buying of stuff (or not) isn't actually the cost of the goods, but the shipping costs on top of anything else. So I'd probably be inclined to pay a fair bit for a decent product, as long as the carriage was reasonable. If the carriage charge seems too high, I'd likely not buy whatever it is regardless of the cost and quality of the goods on offer.

It might be a bit of an arbitrary way of looking at things, but may be something that needs taking into consideration.

Of course, I'm a sucker for swag and random shiny amusing entertaining things, so generally I'll pay a fair price for pretty much anything as long as I like it.

For me, it would depend on the awesomeness of said shirt. Also, whether or not shipping costs rocket for international players...

(From a US point of view, where many ARGs appear to originate, I suppose Canada is not quite International...but, yeah, you know. Right?)

I'm playing What Is This Game? right now and they have some cool shirts. I really want to buy one as some of them are pretty neat, but they don't have them in girly shirts or sizes. I don't need another huge shirt to sleep in. So I would totally buy a shirt for an ARG I liked, just so long as they have options for smaller people with boobies.

Usually buying a shirt depends on if I have any money at the time. Also, why limit yourself to only buying shirts in games that last long term? Some great games ran for 6 months or less.

I would say - don't depend on swag to pay for some/most of your expenses. That being said, there are lots of players that like to buy mementos of the games they have played. I would say $20 is probably the most you could get away with charging, because if you go much higher than that, people start looking at you funny.
