Oh God! I was right! This is going to be so lame if true.
It's just a liberal pseudo intellectual rant.
Tagruato (Big bad corporations) in pursuit of oil creates a monster (Al Qeada).
The monster attacks our biggest city and our liberty (literally the SOL) in retaliation.
Scenes of 911... shaky camera, building falling, running into stores, trying to find people and trying to evacuate.
The monster reeks havoc then leaves to not be seen again but produces little monsters (fear mongering politicians) who infect people which produce more little monsters or destroys them. What is the monster in Cloverfield really?
Fear.
"I don't know what we saw, but it's still here!"
"Whatever it is, it's winning"
Haven't seen it...don't know what it is...but be afraid.
Sounds a lot like what liberals think the War on Terror is.
Regardless of where you are on the political spectrum if this is what the intent of the movie is then it stinks. I just hope it isn't too blatant in the film and it can still be enjoyed as a monster film.
I don't think there's anything wrong with this assumption. It's a very good one and no one here should rip on it so easily (omg its another 9/11 movie about war sux0r) without thinking first: Everything is subjective.
Maybe JJ's making a statement, maybe he isn't. That's for us to decide. If we want to read into a possible 'take' on America and everything that's happened lately, then we're allowed that. If we don't and just want to enjoy a good monster flick, then we're more than allowed that as well.
By no means should anyone be upset by this possiblity. (Personally, if this was the way JJ intended to take this movie, I still wouldn't be upset -- I tend to look outside of horror/monster plot alone. Cinematography, mood, etc. all play into my overall enjoyment of a film. Usually, underlying analogies never come up until long after I've viewed the film and am discussing it with others).
Plus, it's Empire . It's a magazine. They gotta' sell issues somehow. Don't let them make up your mind for you before you've even seen the movie.

The only reason they think it's a 9/11 movie is because their minds are fucked.
Doncha' know?

Bryan Burk, a producer of Cloverfield, whose plot is guarded but seems to involve a monster attack in New York, said his film started out as just that: a monster movie. Yet as production continued, it became more and more clear that Cloverfield was "a 9/11 movie that's not actually a 9/11 movie."
so there you go

If that's the case, it's totally uncalled for. I may be the only one, but 9/11 is a taboo subject for me when it comes to movies. I hope JJ left it alone, or maybe he was still in diapers when it happened that it's not important enough to him.

FOLKS:
Of course it has a deeper meaning to it, and YES it IS 9/11.
One of the MAIN reasons why they did put a deeper meaning behind is because:
THE VERY FIRST GODZILLA MOVIE.
Godzilla represented America's H-bomb experiment and Hiroshima.
I'm not just making it up- Wikipedia it.
Personally i see nothing wrong with it. boo-hoo about the liberals, well guess what- The Liberals own your media.
Politicians suck anyways.
I'm not voting for any of the candidates because they're all just gonna be tools anyways. Whatever happened to the leaders that said lines like
"Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country"
"Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind."
"I am not bound to win, but I am bound to be true. I am not bound to succeed, but I am bound to live by the light that I have. I must stand with anybody that stands right, and stand with him while he is right, and part with him when he goes wrong."
"I have the consolation of having added nothing to my private fortune during my public service, and of retiring with hands clean as they are empty."
Now, all we have are bumbling idiots who do what's best for them.

obviously we know its a monster movie lol, but its saying it unravels the mystery... maybe there will be more pictures, info.... possible pic of MGP? who knows... i dont have a scanner, so anyone else in the UK will have to oblige if so.
It's unlikely they are going to have any new information The lead time for a magazine like that is at least a month, or so.

I don't know. Yes magazines have a lot of lead time but Empire did a great job with LOTR. They got a lot of stuff no one else had.

god damn liberals making movies and stuff. They're probably gay and jewish too. what they should do is a make 9/11/war movie that shows those dark people as evil and us americans as heroes who plant flowers and play with kids.
[/sarcasm]
Why does this have to political? Cant we just turn our brains off and watch a monster beat the shit out of NYC? There is way too much liberal bashing going on here so i had to defend those of us on the left.

man... I personally think that was a joke by the Editor. I doubt they kick off their article on the Editor's Letter. Either way, even if JJ has an agenda (I doubt it's as fervent as Oliver Stone's), I wouldn't care. I'd enjoy the movie, just like I enjoyed the cool scenes in 300 without thinking about political messages.

You know, it's not like they've gotten to see the movie or anything0 they just got to do some interviews. Any movie that has to do with the destruction of New York is going to be paralleled to 9/11. That's a big 'duh.' With the obvious portrayal of martial law and overbearing and under informed medical staff glimpsed in the trailers, its obviously a commentary on some level- of Americans, of Politics/Military, or of human nature.
It's Mr. President not evacuating the major cities before the Aliens attack in Independence day. It's the PETA bust and Military rape in 28 Days Later.
Everything has meaning- whether or not its initially intended. How many authors argue that they never meant their books to be an allegory (Tolkien, James Joyce, ect.)? If you wanna get all pseudohip political pretension in my monster movie, be my guest. Unless the characters have a 'Gee, what have we learned today, kids' moment, I'm going to take it at face value.
Take heart in the fact that the producer says it's a 9/11 movie that's not a 9/11 movie. How vague can you get?
