I'm beginning to think it is a side-scanning sonar.
The 'line' going from the middle-left to the upper-right could be the product of an incomplete sonar sweep originating at the left-midpoint (where the little boat is).

What I don't quite get for sure is if sonar here is in a downward or side scanned mode. There's that funky little 'ship' icon on the left of the images. It's very important if we are seeing a downward image. It would appear to be that to me - but then the difference in the two would mean the object is basically rising from the seabed or from beyond the sonar's effective reach.

It doesn't look like a side scan sonar to me, for one they are usually much cleaner.

Here you can see MBE vs Side Scan, with the latter much clearer.

What doesn't add up, and is probably a result of the "Hollywood Effect", and that's the red doesn't appear on the scale, so maybe they're trying to show it's "off scale" but I think it's a suspect interpretation. I think what you are looking at is Red is higher Green is middle, Blue is lower (traditional).

So as you suggest. I think what you're seeing is that which is in red, is coming up off the seabed.

What I think it's important to note is that adjusting color alters this image in a very fundamental way that basically destroys it's original content. Because sonar images like this are artificially colored, shifting colors destroys important differentiations in the color gradients created when the image is generated.

What we need is someone that has a way to interpolate the missing parts where the 'scan lines' black out the details a good bit. I tried using a crude blurring technique, but it's not really that effective.

With that it mind, I've made this from mine, I've seperated the colour channels and recombined them in b&w, with the green being brightest and blue being darkest. I've added blur (bit too much) and sharpened.

Is it possible to mask the blue/green out of the first image, and then compare it to this other one? I think you'd see what I'm talking about, something emerging.

It ends up looking very similar, it's what I did here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=445042#445042

That's just a comparison between the red channels.

Well the thing to remember is that Sonar gives a depiction of geometry. What appears in the image are reflections off of objects, generally colored by strength of the signal returned.

If this were a view of volcanic activity, it would mean rock, bubbles, or lava were coming up out of some empty area in the shape depicted.

I'm not sure that the effects guys went to the trouble of actually simulating a realistic sonar return off the model of the beastie, more likely this is meant to tantalize, and perhaps give a rough shape of the beastie, though possibly not true to what you would actualy see on sonar.

That said, will keep playing with it Smile and again, Slusho Addict Smile You rock!

Can someone please remind me how we know this image is in-game? I've lost track. Thanks.

I ,too sent them a message yesterday, and have heard nothing back. What subject matter did you write to them about?
