[OT] The Host Just watched it... anyone else seen it? It was because of Cloverfield that I found this movie actually. It was mentioned several times on here and I looked it up.
Which brings me to my question. Who here has seen it and, what did you think of it?
Personally, I looked past the aweful overdubbing and I thought it was pretty good. The monster was pretty sweet looking I think...

oh man, I loved The Host. On the DVD, the "making of" videos are great - they show how they actually filmed in the sewers. I think the director is now making movies in the US or with US financing, I can't wait to see what he makes next.
By the way, there was a great (detailed and interactive) ARG for The Host called Monster Hunters Club. We played it here on unfiction. The url monsterhuntersclub.com was on the promotional materials for the movie when it was released in the US.

One scene I REALLY thought "How did THAT WORK!?!?" was... when the creature met its demise. That thing is rather large, it was moving fast, how did he stop it so easily?
Also, when it was on fire the CGI didn't look the best but, other then that, the monster CGI was very good for a low budget movie. $10m to make that? Imagine what they can do with 3x that for Cloverfield

I loved the movie, but it wasn't a traditional horror thriller. It rotated between comedy, drama, horror and the works. I call it an emotional abortion. Wonderful, but the end shocked me to pieces.
I liked the campaign for it- that didn't reveal the monster until the movie. I guess that's why we keep comparing it to Cloverfield- though that movie was more about interpersonal relationships and bureaucracy.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The Uncle was the best part of the movie- that whole paperclip- office escape scene? Ten kinds of bad ass.

Perhaps someone here could explain the why behind the conspiracy and also the dumping of formaldehyde...
I understand that there was some sort of fake virus... but what did the Government gain from the conspiracy? And what did that scientist (or whatever) gain from dumping all those bottles... there was no mention of it being expensive to dispose of it properly or anything, he just made the guy dump it.
Other than that I quite enjoyed the movie, my favorite part is how they all line up along the water to throw shit at the monster when they see it, reminds me of people taking pictures of the SOL's head, it doesn't really add to the excitement or anything, but it's probably ACTUALLY what we would do. Oh, and I also loved how the Monster used it's tail to swing under the bridge, he moved very fluidly - I like that in a monster.

Excellent movie. The lead character (can't remember his name) reminded me an awful lot of Homer Simpson.

From wiki: The film was in part inspired by an incident in 2000 in which a mortician working for the U.S. military in Seoul dumped a large amount of formaldehyde down the drain. In addition to its environmental impact, this has added some antagonism against the United States.
In other words, we did something to make South Korea mad, so they played it up in this film. I think the "why" in the film is left intentionally vague so that it looks like it was a completely selfish and pointless thing to do.

new film by Bong Joon-ho: Mother jusi fyi- not a monster movie..a thriller The brilliant director of the host, finally has released a new film "Mother."
Bong Joon Ho's film will be released in New York and LA.
Here is a review in the NYtimes from yesterday:
http://www.nytimes.com/2010/03/12/movies/12mother.html
Being introduced to the "sublime" work of this director from playing an ARG is one of my favorite things. Thanks to Dave Szulborski for the Monster Hunters game.
