And so the similarities to Godzilla continue.
I've searched and searched but could not find a video of the original Godzilla teaser on New Years Eve 1997.
Does anyone else remember? The ball dropping in Times Square, the familiar roar and then the ball and building toppling down?
This wasn't quite the same but still... JJ is borrowing heavily from the myth, isn't he?

I remember that promo. That's the only one that I thought was really cool, and it's the only one that's not included in the special features on the GINO DVD.
I don't know where you could get it, since it's not on the DVD. I suppose it's in a video archive somewhere. Maybe they can put it on the Cloverfield DVD!

Did they really do that? Awesome!
I wanted them to drop the ball, then everyones like HAPPY NEW YEAR! and then all of a sudden the Cloverfield roar rumbles Times Square and all the lights go out except one screen, where they play a new trailer.
That would have been EPIC.

Prime opportunity for our favorite "Troll" to step up with all his plethora of Zilla knowledge and pull out the requested teaser trailer. Let's see if he bites.

Nope, nope and nope.
It was just a short teaser. There was the New Years Eve countdown, then the ball starts to drop, then Zilla's tail comes in and knocks it to hell, and the building falls down.

Those of you that know me know that I'm not propagating the "this is Godzilla" line of thought. I have my own "alien" thoughts on the project.
I just wanted to point out how much Cloverfield is borrowing from the original Big Guy.

Yes, Anteros, I agree with you. It's NOT Zilla, But that teaser promo was cool, and we wouldn't mind seeing it again.

Exactly. It was very short and happened somewhere close to midnight. I remember thinking, "But it's not midnight yet!" when it started and then just got chills when I realized what it was.
It was very cool.

The tragedy of Zilla was not how bad it was, but how great it could have been.
A giant monster that kicks the shit out of New York! How cool would that movie be if somebody made it right!
