I remember reading an interview with HR Giger around the time Alien was released (1979?) where he said that skeletons and mechanical parts were sources of the inspiration for the Alien design. Giger used to be a mechanical engineer.
Certainly the little sea creature has an exo-skeleton so I can see the similarities.

Yeah, me too. I saw the movie when it opened in the theaters. And had a few books on Giger. I don't recall anything about sea creatures. I believe, they chose Giger on the basis of other artwork he had done (as mentined above).

Yeah he'd already drawn something resembling the alien head and the ship's space jockey in this picture: http://www.meridian.net.au/Art/Artists/HRGiger/Gallery/Images/giger-necronom-v-medium.jpg
And the body in this one:
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/e/ef/NecronomiconIV.jpg

so the inspiration would have to come before that if true.
Obviously the main inspiration is the human body itself.

Those loud roars don't really match those types of creatures...they don't seem to have any mouths.

Of course, no one has ever seen/heard a 350 ft version of them, so... Very Happy
