[INFO]/[SPEC] ilovebees/Beast link

I've tried as hard as I could to make sure this wasn't already posted somewhere. I don't think it is. Info first:

I am reliably informed by a friend in the puzzle (non-ARG) community that the puzzle team at Microsoft who developed the promo for AI (The Beast) is known as "The Hive".

Now speculation:

For me, at least, this confirms that the PMs of the Haunted Apiary are the same team that did the Beast. The choice of ilovebees.com as a trailhead is an in-joke.

More confirmation just in case it's necessary:

  • The drop-caps in the Gulliver's Travels quote are A and I. This is a fairly straightforward reference to the AI puzzle to confirm for people who didn't know the Hive info above that it's the same people.
  • The traffic capacity of the ilovebees site is very high (surviving a Slashdotting), which indicates corporate backing.
  • The Halo 2 trailer text pointing to ilovebees. Halo 2 will be published by Microsoft.

Please be gentle, this is my first post here. Smile

Trout

The server load thing..

Slashdotting wasn't that bad, it was only games.slashdot
Also, we know it's hosted at Rackspace.

Not sure what point you were making with #3

I know the other stuff was already posted. The new information (Beast developer teamname) was at the top. But thanks for the trout, I was feeling like fish tonight anyway. Smile

[edit]The point of #3 is that Microsoft is responsible for Halo 2's publicity and marketing. The team that developed the Beast work at Microsoft. Sorry I didn't make that clearer.[/edit]

Yes, the site has corperate backing. All of the related sites (yes, there's a lot) are hosted on 15 machines co-loc in about 3 states. The site has massive bandwidth behind it, I guarentee it.

Just wait, you'll see when the fun starts.

Sincerely,
Anonymous

Anon isn't doing anything but starting rumors and wild spec.

I think he is trying to be helpful, but all you're doing is adding something that should be kept to a minimum.

So we're pretty sure this is the 'Beest'?

Well, sorry. I have just been astounded by the popularity of this project . My very point of posting is to stir up hype. What I have seen is of such great scope that it's very hard NOT to share it.

I am kind of envious, I would love to participate in such a game, but being my position, I can't. Maybe that's why I post, to try and participate in the only way I can. It's of such great magnitude that the term "Ignorance is bliss" comes to mind. Oh well.

Sincerely,
Anonymous

Anonymous issue

I agree with No on the Anonymous thing.

Anonymous: I realise you are trying to be helpful and/or to build excitement without giving anything away. However, if you do have behind-the-scenes information it might be unfortunate if you give away something spoilerish by mistake. If I were you, I would be quiet and snigger as people trundle happily off on assorted wild goose chases.

You actually ARE influancing the game by giving us information we should not have.

I hope you didn't sign any kind of legal document about leaking information about the game.

The information I give was already "known" in a way, I waited until today to post for that very fact, just wanted to give confirmation.

I'm going to stop posting now, I'll let the game go on and enjoy it from the sidelines. If anyone lives in the Oakland/SF area and wants to discuss things in person, I'm more than willing.

Thanks again,

krystyn: once upon a time I studied a lot of physics and I suppose that taught me to live with doubt. Smile

While it's possible that the Hive/ilovebees link is intentionally misleading, I find it very unlikely. Here's a straightforward train of thought on the link (just restating my previous points).

Who is responsible for marketing Halo 2 and therefore has control over the trailer?

Microsoft.

Who at Microsoft has sufficient experience and puzzle-making expertise to make a game like this? In other words, if Microsoft wanted to do a promo like this, who would they ask?

The Hive.

I hear that some people round here like, even love, the things that come out of the Hive?

Yes. I love bees. Smile

I didn't know that there were 32 different domains and over 1.2 gigs of data involved.

Nobody else here did, either.

Until you told us.

That was insider info.

I didn't know that it was 32 domains and 1.2 gigs.

Now I do.

I feel like I've typed this before.

Oh, that's right.

He gave us information we were not supposed to have.
