What he means is... you improperly trouted. You can't just say TROUT ... you are also supposed to post a link to the proper thread.

Or the original poster can realize he/she has posted an old subject and use the search function like he/she should have from the start. We make it too easy to trout here. I am only joking of course, your system is your system.
Lock this forum down...

If they're trouts do they really need a link? I think that defeats the point of the most basic version of survival of the fitest considering survival would imply a few mouse clicks.

It's not my system - I don't work here.

Yes. Not everyone trouts on purpose.
The whole point of TROUTing someone IS TO BE HELPFUL! You are saying Thanks for posting that, but this is already being discussed here...LINK
By providing a link to the new thread, hopefully people will post there instead, and ignore the trouted thread.
Ideally, the OP would re-post their comment in the appropriate thread after being trouted, so that thread is bumped to the top.

Actually, a real trout didn't do so on purpose. Someone that knowingly creates a new thread for a subject already covered in it's own thread or as part of another thread (because it's too narrow to stand on it's own) is just being lazy - and essentially being a troll.

I'm glad that somebody else gets it.

I guess I'm a tad vague on the difference between trout and a troll. So if someone posts a thread because they're lazy or want attention even though that same thing is already posted somewhere else, that's a troll.
But if they do the same thing, but it's an honest mistake, it's a trout.
And usually a troll tells us it's an honest mistake even though they just did it to get attention...
Ugh,.. Whatever.
