Are you kidding?
I haven't seen one shred of advertising for this movie at all here in Canada. Not even a poster. Not a single person knows about it and no one I talked plans on seeing it.
Where in Canada are you and what channels are you watching. I was watching a football game a couple nights ago and I saw 4 different Cloverfield commercials in an hour and a half.

I dunno. Cloverfield is a very good opening and has much potential. The producers just gotta play there cards right. Maybe get some calls out. Maybe some more advertising.
On TV they should post like a huge attack that seems so real but then at the end static comes up and then Cloverfield comes up. I thought it was real at first on the commercial then they said the movie date. Me and my girlfriend

going to see it. If I have to pick her up in my arms and take her I will!
(Maybe like 40 feet then I'll stop.)
It has a slight chance with Spiderman 3. I didn't like Spidey 3 because he was cocky.
One thing I hate is cocky superheroes. Like Superman... I HATE HIM!

I'd say this film will set a high opening weekend for January, but that's about it.
Honestly, I think it's just a monster smashing things up movie. Not a HUGE demographic for that sort of thing.
The ARG has given a relatively small group of people more involvement, but the movie-going public won't have that. If they find some way to tell a real story through the random camera footage, maybe, but I think we're looking for a significant second weekend drop off.

Oh, that's interesting! But... why is this prediction about Cloverfield with No. 6 ? Is it a curse or something?

Cloverfield is up against some bad movies so it will definitly be #1 that weekend... the movies that debut that same weekend are:
Mad Money- chick flick
27 Dresses- chick flick
Fan Boys
Teeth

I don't think Cloverfield will be the highest grossing film opening weekend, but it could be one of the most profitable.
Spiderman made $150 million in the opening weekend, but it cost $258 million to make. It took two weeks for Spiderman to break even.
$258 million gross = $0 profit!
Along Came Polly has the highest January opening weekend at $32 million, but it cost $42 million to make.
I Am Legend had a $76 million opening weekend, and a $150 million budget.
If Cloverfield can pull in half of what IAL did in it's opening weekend, it will have already made a profit. I think it will do a little better than that.

I think Cloverfield is going to do damn well at the box office. Not sure if it will be record breaking but I think it will do better than we think it will. A lot of people have been saying that not enough people know about this movie. I think that is crap. Whenever I turn on the tv nowadays, I will undoubtedly see a cloverfield commerical. I am in college and I have been suprised of the amount of conversations brought up by random people involving Cloverfield. Everyone seems to be like, "this movie looks bad ass" . Since my classes dont begin until January 22nd, right now is kind of down time in the college community. There aren't a lot of parties, people are spending time with their families. One of more inticing things to do is to go see a movie. And what do people want to see?? Well i'll give you a hint: It involves a very angry monster and a lot of destruction

Hate to compare it, but The Blair Witch Project cost about $30K to make. It would have made a profit if only one theater on the planet was showing it.
Heck, do you know that *every* SNL-based movie except one made a profit, and decent profit at that?
Just in case you're wondering, the one that didn't is...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Stuart Saves His Family
Yes, even The Ladies Man was profitable.

I think that Cloverfield will break at least three records:
1) Highest Jan opening weekend
2) Hightest of any Jan weekend
3) Hightest grossing film opening in Jan
My best guess would be that it'll make about $40m on it's opening weekend and $170-180 million total.
