Off topicish

This is a classic example of expectation or other senses influencing what we hear. It's known as the McGurk effect.

Not really on topic, but I thought it might be interesting while we're on the subject of subjective hearing.

true, not really on topic here because we don't see anything... but fascinating no less.

Hey, I tried playing the sound at twice the normal speed, and at one and half times. That "speech" sound sounds like normal bees buzzing. Is it possible someone took the sound a queen piping, annd overlayed it on a slowed down version of buzzing bees creating one very odde noise?

Uhh if any1's intrested the notes in that piece of music are:

E, E, Eflat, Fsharp, E

Dunno if this means anything at all to any1, but hope it helps in sum way!
Btw Eflat can also b Dsharp, and Fsharp can b Gflat Very Happy

That kinda sounds like the Monitor in the first halo, except Chirpier and higher.

I'm still not sold

So, I think there's something in the soundfile, for no other reason than the fact that there's information imbedded in all the other media on the site (in the javascript, in the html, in the images). In fact, I'd be surprised if there wasn't something hidden in the audio.

But... I don't think we've found it. Yet.

The sounds we heard so far are intriguing, but I still don't hear anything that can be discerned. Some people hear "help me", some people hear "my name is", and so on and so on....

I think some of the people on the Wiki are getting close. There's an mp3 (I think someone linked to it in this thread) that sounds very similar, minus the chirping. someone on the wiki posted screenshots of the waveforms and they match up almost exactly. This is very important from a watermarking standpoint. In college, I studied spread-spectrum watermarking, and one of the things that makes it so effective is that it is virtually impossible to remove or decode the watermark without the source file. Of course, I've been out of college for 6 years and the only thing I can remember now is long division.

Damnit, we need an audio/math guru!

Something else

Here's another reason why I suspect audio watermarking. check out the info on this page.

Check out this original audio clip

Now check out this clip. Does that chirping sound familiar?

another attempt

Using cool edit, I went for the direct path and tried to single out the frequencies for the human voice.

While this doesn't end up sounding like much, the beginning of the sound is repeated at the end. (the "cleep cleep" sounding word)

I have only used graphic equalizer filter on this. As a low quality sound @ 8 kbps, I'm afraid using other methods on it will result in audio fragmentation more than anything.

(and the high pitched noises remind me so much of resonating As)

Don't think I discovered anything, but it was fun to play with!

[SPEC] Has anyone tried using the sound file as a Viginere key to one of the pictures or something? that might be why the sound file doesnt decode under steg or anything, maybe its the key to something else...

Has anyone thought about the Queen piping theory? I mean why would they (or just Dana) choose the myth out of all the pages. Is it possible that its an extremely poor recording and/or something to throw us off (the chirping that is). The myth page was chosen for some reason, not some random coincidence. It's also possible that there is something someone hasn't tried on the audio files which would correspond to the myth. A guy trapped, a queen trapped. Dunno, just pure speculation.

Tried to subtract added sound using the original bees sound.

Using the bee.mp3 i've tried to filter out the added sound to bees1.wav.

The following is what i've done. Downsample and amplify bee.mp3 (must bee what the creator of bees1.wav has done, else i would have chosen to upsample bees1.wav). Put the two mono files in a stereo-wav and extract the center channel (the difference) using Adobe audition.

Here are the results.

You can't determine with any certainty if it is infact a voice, but I think (hope) I managed to remove the bee-sound with minimal damage to the overlay. Anyways, the stereofile is there for people to play around with the extraction process. This could also be done with some more professional software (matlab anyone?)

Big question. Is this a voice? However there is no question that something has been overlayed.

I don't like peeing on the birthday cake, but I asked dana about the sound files and got this:

Quote:

hi Troy,
thank you so much for your note of support, it's much appreciated,
tonight especially. (nervous about that first countdown...) so far,
so good... I mean, nothing unusual seems to be happening. I guess
that's good, right?
it was my aunt's idea to have the bee buzzing and queen bee piping
sounds on the site. as far I can tell, they're the same as they always
were...

Hello Dana,

I've been following the mishap at your site and thought that I would
finally shoot you a note of support and reassurance that there are
people who are working on this WITHOUT trying to hack your
email/voicemail.

I have a question for you....many of us have been puzzling over the
sound files on the site, and we were wondering if there is anything you
could tell us about them. Do you remember where you got them? Have you
listened to them recently? Do they sound different at all. Do you have
any pre-breakdown originals that you could pass on via an attachment?

Thanks

-Troy
