but in the helicopter scene at the end of the trailers for both of the theatrical trailers its day time and im pretty sure that the monster is causing the thing to spin erratically but idk if im wrong tell me because i just might be

Ahh. I thought of that actually, did that look like dawn or twilight to anyone else?

I mean, say our tanks, bombs, so on don't destroy it... It could be a good reason why the monster leaves [assuming that nothing destroys it].

It attacks at night and leaves as the sun rises?

It's a pretty classic horror device, I wouldn't be surprised to see it used here in some way, it seems to fit extraordinarily well with what we know (and what we assume).

this movie, in many ways wreaks of 'classic horror'. [With it being a possibility] I mean, a giant alien from outer space? Sounds like a typical 1950's horror film to me.

Just goes to show it never really gets old, look how this movie has played people's current fears (9/11 comparisons). It was scary then, when it played on the fear of all out nuclear exchange between super powers, and its scary now. I can't wait for this film.

People would say it's underwater.

I think it was destroyed and is in the process of being covered up... but who knows.

Like I said, I haven't done much speculation, I have read what others think. It seems the consensus is leaning toward a MGP destruction of the station, with a few suggesting that it was never there or was an underwater station. I doubt both of the latter two ideas myself and think the MGP destruction scenario seems the most likely. I am sure if you pour through this thread there are other ideas floating about.

Alright people. Time for me to get typing.

After reading all the posts here, I've come up with this:

I'm not sure why MGP attacks Chuai (Chaui DOES exsist, Tagruato wouldn't have mentioned it on their website: Families in Japan want to know about their relatives), but I do know (Or think) that MGP is definetly after the tanker. It's a Tagruato ship, and it was the only one destroyed at the harbor. It would be soo retarded to find it a coincidence. Anyway, I like the negative phototropic theory. Order of Events (Speculated):

Chuai sends subs to find something in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge close by. MGP is residing somewhere there and is awakened (or startled) by the lights of the subs*. Just as the subs travel back to the Station, MGP attacks it, and gets a glimpse of Chuai's lights. {HOLY SHIT IT'S THE THING}**
One of the crew members exclaim when they see the radar. I'm sure Tagruato knew of something large close by, but didn't expect something like 'ol Godzilla. Chuai gets blown, and even if the station was submersible or not, it could have happened a month ago (December 18th)
and the debris that could float must've floated away.
When T.I.D.O Wave agents come, they find nothing. Even if they peeked underwater, you wouldn't be able to see anything. NOTE: When they arrive, it's daytime, and they only spend some hours there before heading back.

Tagruato sends a few tankers from either an Eastern Seaboard Station, or from Keiko Station. NOTE: Keiko is on (or near) the Puerto Rico Trench. I'm wondering if Keiko plays a part in the ARG. It's a little more than 1200-1500 miles away from the NYC coast, so it might make sense. Anyway, if a few tankers from either places, it scouts the area around the area that Chuai once stood. Euchre's guess is that it's January 10th-12th when they departed, and the 13th-15th when the arrived.
It's nightime, and lights shine down, and the tankers plus more ships slip close to MGP's home. MGP, now aggravated by the constant threats, attack the fleet. A few ships barely manage to escape, and it's now dawn with direct sunlight from the sky. The ships go to the nearest largest port- New York City.

MGP is mostly nocturnal, and can stand a little bit or light in cloudy days or dawn and dusk.
MGP falls back into the darkness of the sea, heading slowly to the general direction of the ships. Night falls. Some ships go boom. After a night or so, the tanker is the only one left. As it nears New York City, it sneds out an S.O.S. with a transcript. If no one on board speaks fluent English, the Coast Guard wouldn't be able to make out the distress clearly, but understands the S.O.S. well enough, sending a few squads to make sure and notifies troops at near bases to be ready for back-up if needed.
Back to MGP, he catches up at night, and slows down during times of direct light. As the tanker reaches NYC at evening of the 18th, it slows down due to orders from the Coast Guard.

MGP, now seizing it's chance, waits to late night (Due to Manhattan's lights) and attacks the tanker. When the sharp metal of the tanker peirces MGP's mouth or hand, OR, the lights of NYC directly shine on him, he roars his big ass roar. "OH SHIT"- (First guy who spoke in the Widget.)
The Coast Guard, now seeing the tanker is crushed, gathers all forces from near bases.
Cloverfield begins.

I bet it'll be kinda off if we get at new updates from TIDO, Tagruato, or Jamie, but it's pretty damn accurate with what we have now.

Oh yeah, he roars when he thinks the SOL is another animal and rips her head off.

I don't remember there being any actual facts behind the monster thinking the SOL is another animal...

Everyone is putting so much emphasis on this tanker near the Statue of Liberty.. and I don't think it warrants it. I really think it just got in the way of Grumps.. I don't believe he chased it, or was inside it, or anything like that.

A hypothesis is that Mr. GP is actually a Mrs. GP. Tagruato, unaware of giant Mrs. GP, discovered little, Grumpy Babies and they are doing tests on them. I think that would make any mom a little angry. Hard to attck the tanker if the babies are on board, but if they are being unloaded, perhaps that is when Mrs. GP decides to take matters into her own claws.

Stolen babies = following tanker and not destroying
finding babies = one pissed off GP and one surprised Tagruato(and NYC)

the rest of the story is just a confused mom trying to retrieve her babies before they get lost in NYC

Uhm... The Tanker was a Tagruato tanker!! There's no way that we followed the ARG on Tagruato just to realize that only one of their tankers were in the way of MGP. If you want proof, the 5 Minute Widget shows the Tagruato logo on the tanker during the newscast by NY1.

Ask anyone else...

Sorry, I was just speculating. So far, I can't think of any good reasons yet... AND we don't know what caused the explosion seen from Rob's roof.

This theory's way too much like Godzilla. I kinda doubt it, and I feel my theory's better.
