[Source/Question] ILB Pop-Up Delays

Hey,
I'm a bit new to this, so please tell me if I'm doing anything wrong.

Somewhere I had read something about the possibility of sending commands to the website or an e-mail address to get some response, so I was playing around in telnetting to the site.

Possibly interesting thing I found. The reason for the delay of the pop-ups that occur is that there is an actual delay in sending the HTML code for the pop-ups. (To see this in Windows, atleast, Hit run then type in "telnet www.ilovebees.com 80" then type in "GET /"

I know with some of the more advanced web technologies (PHP, servlets, etc) you can control when data is sent back the other way, but I'm not the most knowledgable person with stuff like this. Maybe someone a bit more knowledgable can answer. Is this type of delay common in a website, is it just a trick the hacker used for effect with the pop-ups, or could it be someway of accessing or talking to whatever is controlling the site?

Cool discovery. But I think it's primarily just for effect.

This delay is now apparent when loading ILB's main page in a web browser, but wasn't earlier. I think it's most likely just caused by the very heavy server load at the moment.

I'm new at this too, but as a web developer I can say with certainty its probably not because of the load... this effect could be accomplished by setting the response buffer of the page to false, and then writing a simple delay routine on the page (in this case, in PHP, which is installed on the machine).

btw, i dunno if it's been mentioned before, but the site is running Apache/1.3.19 (Red-Hat/Linux). A little surprising b/c of the purporded Bungie/Microsoft connection (though MS does use Unix on several of their high traffic sites, so maybe not)

Netcraft has confirmed it:

The server is running Windows 2000.

netcraft is often wrong. it is not a simple set up in there, many boxes at more than one locations, but it is most definitely irrelevant at any rate.

As far as I can tell, the delay comes from a script. If you read the source for the website, the very bottom contains the html about the black box warning. This always has the correct number of days hardcoded into the text... unlike the counter, which is associated with a javascript program running on the server.

I have also noticed that if I try to view page source (at least in Firefox) before the warning is done showing, it remains blank until the page fully loads all the information and the complete black box warning.

Therefore, I assume that it is running a script that intentionally delays the site while it calculates the amount of time left (among other things, I am sure).

Or it's now taking longer for the server side scripting to complete, as the server(s) are under heavy load right now. The delay has only become apparent in the latter part of today and nothing else has obviously changed on the site.. yet. Seriously, I don't think there's much to this.

Or could it be part of the illusion of erosion?

If you do a GET on the index.html page via direct telnet (as toms suggested), you can see that the delay is not because of a client-side JS script... when you do the command, the first part of the page comes in, followed by a distinct pause, then HTML code for the first bit of the message, "HALT", another pause, the second "in 1 days..", etc.

Though I agree it's probably just for effect, since if they coded it without the delay, it'd appear right on top of Dana's site and wouldn't give us a chance to see whats behind the black box. (I inspected the javascript includes and there is no code in there for client-side delays)
