actually, if MGP was adapt at swimming, and did swim at a whales speed, adding in the fact that if a sea mammal stopped swimming it would probably die (i heard it years ago, i just never bothered to check it lately so it could be wrong) it would get here about 3 days sooner

It is wrong. The other person pointed out sharks will die but sharks breath through gills and are cartilaginous fishes not mammals. Mammals like whales and dolphins can stop as they are air breathing animals. Now as is brought up though if grumpypants is part whale how is he breathing underwater for 1000s of years if he was just woken up?? Or maybe he is part fish and not mammal who knows but then how does he breathe while attacking NYC. Not judging your spec just trying to clear up some biology.

Although some sharks have been found to be able to stop and rest but I believe they were in a pretty strong current that passed the water through their gills allowing them to breathe without swimming but this was/is a rarity and possibly only for one type of shark.

edit: 2nd top of the page post in a day. <dances> Very Happy

Twisted Evil We have to take into account that MGP would be slowed down considerably by the tanker that he carries all the way to NYC and blows up in the harbor...

I still don't think he randomly wandered into THAT part of the many hundred mile coastline. Hell, even 10 miles off, and he destroys some random tiny town no one cares about.

It's a Tag tanker, so it seems likely he followed it in. That said, he could only go as fast as the tanker. I'm guessing he follows it all the way from near the (ex) station to NYC. How long would a tanker take to go that far?

Since it had 22 days to get to NYC, it could conceivably make pit stops wherever it wants. We're assuming it's not a sentient being - but what if it is? That would make for a more interesting (and much deadlier and scarier) monster. If it was roused by drilling, what's to say that it didn't go toward the other drilling station in the Puerto Rican trench before coming up the coast? It might go there to see what's what, but not feel threatened by it, or was distracted by a tanker carrying it's goods, or one of many cruise ships in that area (a veritable smorgasbord!). I'm just putting it out there that perhaps MGP didn't travel directly to NYC.

I can't imagine any scenario where a 500 foot creature destroys anything and no one cares. Why would he follow the tanker and not just smash it. He would have to be a pretty slow swimmer/walker to not be able to catch an oil tanker (top speed probably about 20 knots)

EDIT: To answer the question of the OP, yes it is possible, in a movie about giant, imaginary monster, anything is possible. Also the I-95 corridor is not exactly known for random tiny towns.
