you know it's strange... for this picture to be released, some say a few weeks ago, all of a sudden if you google search for the monster this is what pops up everywhere. Now lets look at it for a sec. It's bipedal?check!three claws?check! and it almost matches the footage of MGP walking past the buildings. it could be it, or maybe not, however the final creature will have to be bipedal, have 3 claws and amphibian/reptilian in nature.

You might not have noticed, but exactly the same thing happened with the whale art. (although that was designed around having 3 claws because of the movie poster)

Maybe I'm just from a different era. I watch a trailer for a movie today, and ten seconds into it they tell everything about the movie. Why even go watch it?
Why even make the movie? Just make a teaser, then leak all the details then. That seems like the new delivery system of entertainment.

Im sorry I ever found that thing now. It's all over the internet as the "real" monster.
Sorry Peter. My bad.

If I was Peter I would accept your apology and then remove my web presence until after Cloverfield releases.

Me too. This will probably just fuel crazy speculation. OMG Paramount took down the monster pic!

Ok, this is kinda weird. This picture has been discussed before as just a side thing.
Now its being pushed as the possible monster.
Any else find this kinda weird?
I kinda agree with you on this...I've browsed around a few other forums and there's at least 1 person on each board claiming that there is suddenly a "very strong" chance this is indeed the monster, despite the fact that it has been discovered that this design was meant for an upcoming video game. I'm beginning to second think here honestly but watching the slow motion clip of the monster moving.....something just doesn't look quite right..
I call 50/50 on this one!

Did anyone ever figure out which video game this was associated with?

Someone said that is was from a demo of the Unreal Engine.
But think..why would JJ reveal the monster before the movie hits theatres?

well, that's kinda like the whole theory that the concept art found 4 months ago was a controlled leak by paramount to test the buzz appeal. Uhm, I doubt J.J. would do this but if paramount did indeed leak that, it could have been for a similar reason as that above theory.

Well, I found a couple more shots where you can see the maquette being shown off with some of his other creations. Looks like these were taken at at least one if not two workshops in San Francisco put on by ConceptArt.org (04? and 05).
A little hard to see, but he's there in both. Taken from here:
