It's a casual game that just happens to add additional content on a regular basis. It's not really much different than what you'd find on sites like Jay Is Games, your favorite console, or even the Timewasters section of this board. Just because the advertising to get you to the game is a little funky in the form of the billboards, doesn't mean that it automagically gets put into the realm of ARGs.

Just because you dislike it doesn't mean that it's not an ARG. Find 815 is an ARG. It fits all the requirements of being an ARG.

I'm getting one green, one red for the websites, but I only see one new website on the browser... the heck? I've looked at them all, thought there might be some connection somewhere?

Missing web page?

This may be yet another dumb question, but am I missing something obvious or is the game (once again) broken? Where's the missing web page? I've logged out, logged in, restarted the browser, and yet I still have a red box under web pages.

EDIT: Same for me. Probably an unreleased-but-on-the-site-already thing like the email on Sunday.

Just because I like it doesn't mean I think it's an ARG. Wording something subjectively doesn't make it right.

An ARG, in my opinion, is not linear, doesn't just follow just one line, and is not released in installments such as this. As the above poster says, it is similar to something you'd find on Jay Is Games.

Most ARGS, once they have started for a while, are difficult to get into because of the complexity, and the twists and turns they take. However this one you can go between chapters, and say I started playing in 2 weeks time, I would still be able to start from the beginning (not that this is a problem, I'm just comparing)

Though I'd like to hear why you define that it is an ARG. Though there's probably another thread to discuss this to avoid going off topic.

I don't believe she said she dislikes it. Not that her preference (I'm sure there are quite a few ARGs she didn't like) would have much relevance to the original observation: this is not an ARG. And that is NOT a bad thing, btw.

This term, "ARG", has to mean something; it has to refer to something that is distinctly different from other somethings to validate its existence. You can't just call every puzzly game thing that updates and has a storyline an ARG - that term already refers to a variety of games that ARE distinctly different from this one. It's been a few years of meta debates and, as far as I know, there is still no definition of "ARG" and not even a more or less coherent system to apply to any particular game to determine whether it's an ARG or not. I could look at TLE and say with complete confidence that TLE is "much less of an ARG" (though I'd probably say that it's not an ARG at all) than The Beast, for example. But I would have to write a lengthy explanation as to why - there is not a checklist somewhere that I could refer to to prove what "requirements" the latter satisfies vs the former; there is not a summary definition to compare to to see how many aspects of it are met. It's all very subjective at this point.

I imagine that it was (at least partly) this particular dilemma that motivated SpaceBass to write this very cool article. To sum it up, he says that there is this bubble or a sphere of "chaotic fiction" that envelopes a whole lot of more narrow genres which share similar... guiding principles, let's say. For example, interactivity exists in games like MOTAS, find815, and ARGs. It is one of the guiding principles in many types of chaotic fiction, but a game possessing this element (or many other elements common to ARGs) is not necessarily an ARG. All three of these, however, would fit somewhere inside (but in different areas) of that sphere and are, according to that model, chaotic fiction - they would be different types of chaotic fiction. This comes in very handy when one considers the [more or less] recent influx of promo-type-things that look like ARGs, especially at the beginning, but very quickly make it very clear that they are obviously NOT. Again, that's not a bad thing.

Now, if I were to provide some basis for my statement that find815 is obviously not an ARG, I would probably take the easiest escape: there is no TINAG (for those unfamiliar with the term - a brilliant, concise, and comprehensive explanation). This game is very clearly a game, and makes no attempt to convince us otherwise. There is no "alternate" in this reality - at no point in the game is the player made to wonder whether any of this is real, or caused to suspend his disbelief. Much to the contrary - a player is able to check his progress in the game. Sam either stays on the boat or doesn't basis the player's completing a flash puzzle. That does not happen in real life, and there is nothing "alternate" about it. The question of whether this is a game never has a chance to arise - this is very clearly a game, with no doubt about it whatsoever. You click, get a green square in the progress bar, and are notified as to how many hours are left until the next clue release. This kind of setup cannot be, and is not, an ARG. Moreover, to call this an ARG would be to completely abandon the notion that games like The Beast, Metacortechs, I Love Bees, Perplex City, etc. etc. etc. have belonged to this specific genre of gaming we came to call ARG.

P.S. I realize that this is totally off-topic here, and if further discussion... um.. ensues, I promise to move it to Meta.

Wow, this site is glitchy. Less than hour ago the browser on the laptop on Sam's desk had a different website - this one. After I saw it, I had all boxes green for websites.

Now they changed it to Sunda Stories, but I still have that green box. But, hah, my activity box turned to red. Is there more activity besides the pipe puzzle?

I have completed the circuit puzzle; have not found anything else to do except figure out if the clues in the e-mails mean anything.

one of the e-mails mentions searching for blackrock
one of the e-mails mentions search for Talbot (but Oscar is his real name)
one of the e-mails had the location number in it
so I have googled blackrock and found numerous things called black rock - so have no idea, but I found a BlackRock Blog - think it may be what we are looking for, but don't know:

edited: the blackrock blog is awfully old.

When looking closer at the new web page on Sam's Laptop, there are 2 images that aren't shown. When Looking closer at the bottom image there is part of a filename:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
B?sh Submarine HMS M2.jpg.

Googling that shows:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_M2
The ship sunk at 50°34′34″N, 2°32′55″W which is Glasgow Scotland

EDIT: The coordinates are using the British Reference system, which would leave the ship at The Isle of Portland in the English Channel

Well, it now turns out that my red box turned black, so I guess it was a glitch.

alrighty chapter 2 is up an running, so far we have a new email, a video, and a clue hunt.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the clue hunt is much like the first one, find the clues around the cabin pertaining to season's 1-3.

season 1 clue is the picture in the bathroom, "the smoke pillar"
season 2 is the photobox located on the desk shelf of the "balloon"
and the 3rd is located above your bed, "the ping pong paddles"

now the season 4 clue is quite simple, your given all the answers in the beginning.

For those that want spoilery goodness, the answers are pretty simple (although I did have to listen to... or was forced to listen to... the message twice because of a dumb mistake):
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. South Indian
2. 18 to 27
3. slave ship
4. Magnus Hanso
5. Africa
6. 23
7. Portsmouth
8. Papua New Guinea

And the resulting codeword is:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
423 Cheyenne Walk

This, in turn, leads to:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"If found please return to Penny 020 7946 0893"

Please note: the questions are random and differ from person to person!

I'm in the UK, and stayed up late especially for this update. Regarding the clue you get when you enter the codeword, not sure if this counts as a spoiler, but...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
...phoning and texting that number results in no response whatsoever.

I have since discovered that the number is fake - the UK equivalent of 555. See the London section of this page: http://www.ofcom.org.uk/telecoms/ioi/numbers/num_drama?a=87101

Slightly disappointing - TLE had quite a few interactive elements you could access from the UK.

I have been having glitches all day - I have never seen a clue hunt. Where are you finding it?
