 		Australia's 17Jan is actually something like 2 days before US's 18Jan (I think).

Yes, other way around.
Australia sees the dawn of a new date before we do in the US. In fact the day is closer to over by the time we see it begin.

Actually it's the reverse. Australia's ahead of the US so Jan 17 will actually be Jan 16 in US.

For example as I post this it's currently 2.48pm on Wed 31 October here which I believe is ahead of US/rest if the World time at the moment.
