BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
SEXY CUBAN NEWCOMER BATTLES A MONSTER IN NEW NYC HORROR FLICK
By JOSEPH BARRACATO

January 9, 2008 -- The petite, young and stunning Odette Yustman isn't afraid of monsters - well maybe just the terrifying one hunting her down in the sci-fi flick "Cloverfield." The 22-year-old California native, who plays Aubrey in ABC's "October Road," says she uses a strong work ethic her Cuban parents have instilled in her to carve her niche in Hollywood.

Tell us a little about the movie and your character.

It's a story of survival. A monster in New York who's destroying the city attacks a group of friends. My character (Beth McIntyre) is a naive girl trying to find herself. She has to fight for her life so she can be with the person she falls in love with. I can relate because I'm a hopeless romantic in real life.

So, what's it gonna take for you to leak this secret ending we've heard about?

I couldn't tell you even if I wanted to - I haven't seen it yet.

Likely story.

[Laughs] Honestly, no one has. I have seen a rough cut of the film, but as for the climax it will be a complete surprise for me as well as everyone else when it premieres. The producers won't let anyone see it.

Why does seeing The Statue of Liberty beheaded fascinate people?

That poor thing. Problem is it's so recognizable. It's such an important city and people know it's vulnerable because of things that have happened in the past like 9/11. The poster of her destroyed grabs everyone's attention right away.

How have your Cuban roots helped you in Tinseltown?

I have a huge family they've always taught me to be humble and patient. They taught me to never give up on my dreams and now it feels like they're coming true. Without my roots I wouldn't be where I am.

You've come a long way since you broke into the industry back in 1990. What was it like to hang with "The Governator" in "Kindergarten Cop"?

Arnold [Schwarzenegger] was so nice. I vividly remember the whole experience. He kills me. He's too funny.

"Cloverfield," hits theaters on January 18.
