[SPOILER][RANT] ARG versus MOVIE
There be spoilers here. Don't look!

I posted this in another thread, but I'll put it here in it's own thread and avoid putting possible spoilers in other threads.

There have been 3 other reviews on 3 other sites today by 3 different people, in addition to the one posted here by LC, and they all match up pretty well with this one. I'm about ready to call it legit, and officially say:

The monster sounds pretty disappointing. I think I would've prefered that Konig concept to what's been described. I think only it's sheer size will make it impressive. It sounds like the Rancor from Return of the Jedi, with a couple more little arms.

The late May date and not even a mention of Slusho/Tag/TIDO is really annoying. Makes it seem like this whole ARG, or whatever it is, has been just some kind of alternate universe thing that means exactly jack shit. I really don't want to even play any more.

I've spent three months following this thing, over a month actually playing, and what do we get from it? "Sorry, none of that stuff matters to the movie. Your Slusho! shirt won't mean anything to anybody at the theater that night, but you."

Does anyone else who's put time into this thing every night when you could be sleeping, making sweet love to your wife, husband or other, or spending time with the kids, or doing damn near anything else, feel a bit cheated? If the reviews are true (and it looks like they are) this movie could have ANY backstory anyone could come up with. By the time the DVD comes out, JJ and Reeves could come up with a backstory that has nothing to do with this ARG.

I'm sure the movie will be great, but I'm starting to think I would enjoy it a LOT more if I'd never been involved with the online stuff. I feel the most sorry for those on this board that have had the will power to not read any spoilers and then they go into the movie expecting this ARG to mean something.... and NOT ONE FUCKING MENTION OF ANYTHING IN IT!

WTF JJ??

As far as the Tido/Tag/Slusho stuff not being mentioned...I could care less. Why? Because these 5 people have no idea about the companies......and they definitely wouldn't just say, "Oh Tagruato is behind it."... when they're American and probably never heard of Tagruato or Tido.....these 5 people are trying to survive and save a loved one...not worrying about Tido/Tag..

Except... In this ARG Rob is going to work for Tagruato as a VP of marketing for Slusho! and his friends are throwing him a going away party before he leaves for Japan. So, yes, they DO know about Tag/Slusho. And a friend of the group, Jamie, was last seen banging a member of TIDOwave, and supposedly has been munching on stolen SBN.

Gimme another one.

Personally, I think everyone has confused alternative reality games with viral marketing.

EDIT: It almost seems like the game part was an afterthought. Or at least not planned out very far. Most of the "clues" didn't lead anywhere.

I'm convinced now it never was a game and WAS just viral marketing, but how often does a viral marketing campaign have virtually nothing to do with the product marketed?

I must have missed the part where Paramount forced you to read this message board in lieu of sleeping, making sweet love to your wife, and spending time with your kids.

I just don't think it matters to the actual film. It was just a way to build hype, and, for those with interest, to fill in the backstory. It does have to do with the product otherwise we wouldn't have connected the two, whether it plays big in the film, who knows, I am still going to go see the movie regardless of the "reviews" (which have been popping up since forever). I think the given backstory adds to the enjoyment of the film.

All of this, to me, was a free add on to my $10 ticket price, it's more than most movies give me. I was entertained, the Chuai clips were a cool extra that regular moviegoers won't get. All in all, I am happy, I think folks just expected too much.

EDIT (to avoid double posting): On the upside I like Unfiction, and have been looking for a new game around here, one I can get in on the ground floor. I hope some of the people who came on for Cloverfield stay around here. I have always liked what many of you added to this experience (incl. starshiptrooper Smile ) . Thanks.

Regardless of that, they aren't attempting to find out who started this whole mess. Like the guy said, they're looking for a loved one, in the middle of a power-downed city. Where would they stumble across info like that?

EDIT: But I must agree on the date change thing, it simply makes no sense

Why the hell would they think Tag/Tido would have something to do with the monster? Jamie? She doesn't even believe Teddy....

Like I said...they arn't going to just mention those groups out of the blue....the movies about the 5 people saving a loved one....not discussing Tagruato and Tidowave...when they shouldn't think it has anything to do with the monster anyway...

Now don't get me wrong, the fact that the movie doesn't match the online stuff AT ALL isn't going to ruin my life. It's just a bit.. anoying. Nobody forced me to come on this site every day and go searching around the internet for stuff, it was fun, and it was like we were figuring out the backstory for the movie. Most of us thought we would get some payoff for the whole thing, maybe a early look at the monster, or something.

But now it appears half of the world is getting to see the movie tonight, before anyone on this, or any other Cloverfield forum will get to, and our reward for following this online thing seems to be:

"Eh, screw all you nerds anyway. This stuff has nothing to do with the movie!"

Well, we shall see how true that be when we all see it. Seems odd that they would be so secretive for so long and then start giving screening a week before but I guess so. I don't care, I am about to back away from these forums until I see it. Smile
