[TRIVIA] Is James Steele an in-game character?

First of all, I'm a newbie. Not only to the forum, but to ARG in general. Did not know it even existed until last week when looking for news on Halo 2.

However, I am fascinated by this, have read everyone's insight and very informational commentary, and appreciate the organization, respect and self discipline shown throughout the site.

I believe I have a contribution to make: James Steele is a Computer Sciences Professor at Pyburn University that gave some pretty detailed replies to Dana (look here). Perhaps the most detailed so far. Additionally, Dana seems to forego her usual "thanks for helping" reply, and adopt a more "I'll have everyone look at this" position. However, a google search of either Pyburn University or James Steele comes up empty. I don;t believe such a place exists. So my question is, could he be a ingame character, in which case we should dissect his entire response for?

Nope, he's not an in-game character -- just one of the folks around here taking a little more time out of their schedule for an e-mail than most of us.

I think you're right, Nola. The fact that Dana asked if she could distribute his email to others helping her investigate (read: us) seals it for me. I'm just a newbie at this, too, but I know I'm going to follow this up.

Confirmed -- Prof Steele is a "character" made up by a player.

Generally the idea in these ARGs is that "this is not a game" -- we're not playing characters in a game, we ARE the characters. We're playing OURSELVES.

So I'm less than thrilled with a made-up computer science professor. Perhaps I'm in the minority however.

Not that I don't believe, but just how did you confirm it?

In any case, even if it is just another player, Dana's response is still different from her normal blabber, don't you think? It's like she's saying "This guy is on to something... follow his lead"

but, he didn't say anything new. he just said, "it could spread". which we already knew.

He's saying in no uncertain terms that someone should stop the counter from reaching 0. Let's play along for a mintue... How can that be done? Maybe we need to encourage Dana to pull the plug? Maybe doing so will prompt her to give us more clues?

I'm guessing that our professor will be revealed as a made up character by a player. Just because Dana gave him special mention doesn't really convince me that he is ingame since she quoted xnbomb's email in her blog and I know xnbomb is a player.

I think maybe Dana was just telling us that Steele has some good ideas that we should look into.

EDIT: Was this email posted on UF anywhere? A search doesn't bring it up. And it wasn't in the blog comments, right? If the only place this has been posted is in the WIKI, Steele cannot be a character. A character wouldn't post his emails to a site talking about how this whole thing is an ARG.

I've been talking with him on MSN messenger. Seems legit enough to me.

Code:

[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:21:54] Zap!: i found your name as apart of a blog site
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:22:05] James: Well, yes.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:22:10] James: That would be because I posted on there.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:22:21] Zap!: How do you know Dana?
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:23:08] James: We've corresponded a little bit since this situation began.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:23:50] Zap!: If I may ask, what is it that you teach?
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:25:48] James: I teach computer related courses.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:26:22] James: Mostly computer science, but I also do a night course in using Photoshop.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:27:38] Zap!: Oh, cool, Comp Sci.  Which languages do you use/teach the most?
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:29:12] James: I mostly teach simple things like java, perl, C++, and so on, with experience in one language I teach as a prerequisite to take the class.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:29:36] James: However, I consider that 'side' work, as I'm mostly into working with theories instead of practical program making. Planning for the future, and all that.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:30:21] Zap!: I guess this little incident fits right up your alley.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:30:41] James: It's always been a hobby. I was raised on some of this stuff, after all.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:30:56] James: AIs, that is.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:31:31] Zap!: Mind if I pick your brain on specifics about the AI and it's 'console' commands?
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:32:11] James: Sure, go ahead.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:32:19] James: Though, if you wanted to, you could just read the essay I wrote.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:32:34] Zap!: do you have a link to it?
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:32:41] James: I will post it on the blog.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:32:51] Zap!: alright, that works
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:35:12] Zap!: could you send me a link when you post it
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:35:46] James: http://ilovebees.blogspot.com/2004/07/emergency-exit.html
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:35:49] James: The bottom-most post.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:35:51] James: It's rather long.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:35:56] James: I believe it ended up being fourteen pages.
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:37:06] Zap!: wow, that is quite a essay
[Tuesday, 27 July 2004 - 13:37:25] James: Well, thank you.

I have attached said essay taken from the blog.

He is -not- an ingame character. I recall a group of people writing that letter in the #ilovebees chat room. I will dig up the logs when I get a chance.

James IS NOT an in-game character, he was made up by me and some other players as an alias for us to e-mail Dana as.
The MSN conversation was probably just one of us playing around.
Also, the name was put together using snippets of our REAL names. James from one of us, Steele from me, and Pyburn is the surname of the other one of us.

I didn't re-post,the other guy just happened to post just before i pressed the submit button.
And if you want proof go on the #beekeepers IRC channel and ask tehro, the guy who does most of the stuff involving James.
