though Mr. Grumpy Pants just makes me smile every time I read and think about it, my only problem with Aphynos is.....it just doesn't sound like an American Monster's name. If Abrams hopes to make this big boy an american icon, he needs to think of a better name than "Aphynos". Sounds greek to me!

How about Frank?

Frank works! It's sounds New Yorkish!

no- I'm thinking Leau.

mmm Leau sounds Hawaiin to me. Or at least just the spelling of it. Lu? or Luey?

I GOT IT!!!

Mr. Sniffyvonshnouser!

(if you didn't get that, it came from a commercial, I think for pet food or something)

That can be another nickname, lol

Izzy (I'm going through the list on the Behind the Name website, btw)

EDIT: Oooh... TIMEROTH

EDIT 2: Seamoor (or Seamour, but "moor" is more related to "sea", so...)

You know, I kinda like MGP. It fits our culture of acronyms and shorthand for everything. Heck, even 6 years after the fact we still call it 9/11.

Still, Mr Grumpypants is a bit of an inside joke. How about something like
Massive Grotesque Primitive (with Primitive as the noun, as in Primitive lifeform)?

This is like those Godzilla films where the Generals all stand around and say "We'll we've gotta name the mosnter, so I go with 'Jim-bob'".

Horrible idea...

Like someone said before, they're already using Clover.
I'm cool with that.
For our purposes "MGP" is made of awesome and should be used all the time.

Or, we could make MGP also be a latin name (like every animal has, of course), such as Monstrum Grandis Profundum

Why? It keep MGP, just gives it a legitimate meaning. Of course, it would still *really* mean Mr. Grumpypants, but at least it would give us something half-serious to stick on the thing's Wikipedia page.

Eddy brings up some good points, I particularly honed in on how he thought about early fans helping contribute to the myth if this becomes a big cultural thing (not all that likely, but possible). Unfortunately for everyone who has name suggestions, in this case a name has already stuck, I don't think it can just be changed, not without unduly influencing people with some kind of psychic coercion. There are some great suggestions, and some funny ones but you'd have to get the masses to stop using MGP for any change to occur. Just thinking about the OP and thought I'd chime in.

Aphynos was a shot in the dark. I pretty much wrote it off some time ago. MGP really caught on. But it's just silly enough, that at best, it might remain an inside joke (which is not to say I don't like it). So my current read of the situation is one of 3 things will happen (in order of likelihood). 1. JJ Abrams & Co. will name the monster in an interview, and that will be that. 2. In the absence of #1., some film critic that enjoys a national audience will come up with a name for the purposes of his review and other critics and entertainment outlets will pick up on it, and that will be that. 3. In the absence of #1, the idea of #2 rubs enough of "us" the wrong way that we get somewhat organized and agreed upon, and really do name it ourselves. How we would manage it is an open question, but I think it is in the realm of possibility (since we are the recognized experts). But first we have to agree on what to name it.

Might I suggest "Tagruato".

Re: [META] [SPEC] Aphynos [sic] is the monster's name.
If we decide it is.

With All Due Respect, I See this thread of yours (including the blogs and website you created) as an utter TROLL promotion OOG not SPEC.

If you asked me, you are in a state of "Delusion in Grandeur" taking a shot of getting a name for this anticipated movie.

Hey, your contribution doesnt make any sense. If the name of the monster is considered, I will just have to wait from either Matt Reeves or JJ Abrams to tell it.

Give it a break dude, you are just making a nonsense in this highly informative thread.

And to other members who believed it, please do grow up. Dont be a puppet of other.

My opinion

Eddy wrote:
I wrote an article back in October where I hypothesized that if the Cloverfield monster becomes iconic like Godzilla or King Kong, that we the fans, the early adopters, are contributing to the monster's lore. That is to say, in 5, 10, 20 years, our contributions will be an important part of the modern myth. A bit lofty, and for sure we're just having fun, but still.

So I was betting on the movie's title being the monster's name. A bet I lost. Nevertheless, the monster has to be called something, and that something will eventually be what everyone calls it, and the movie(s), and the merchandise, and the fans, etc. That's my take anyway. And with that in mind, I've been keen to spot the name of the monster. With this last update of Tagruato, I couldn't help but zero in on Aphynos. It was a unique term. A term for an animal. Now I know that it has since been argued that Aphynos was a misspelling of Aphyonus. Because a misspelling would be consistent with past grammatical errors of in game sites, it's even more likely that Aphynos is a purposeful misspelling. Purposeful being the key word, since these aren't really English as a second language people writing this stuff. On the contrary, they are "writers", and therefore deliberate in their errors.

So Aphynos is a purposeful new word. The question is how much purpose to attribute to it. Just a misspelling designed to contribute to the allusion that English is a second language of the fictional Tagruato personnel? Or more, a coherent use of that established idiosyncrasy as a way to give a unique name to the Cloverfield monster? Who is to say the beast isn't the evil Dr. Abe's experiment gone wrong? Debatable, all of it, and I'll admit . . . unlikely.

However, I see here an opportunity to flex our collective contribution. We are, after all, putting in a hell of a lot of time and effort into the project. No one has said that JJ Abrams and Co. will give the monster a name. And if they don't name it, who will? Why not us? What I'm saying is, if we want to, we can be responsible for naming the monster. That assumes, of course, that the powers that be don't name it. But if they don't, if they leave it an open question, the people will eventually christen it ____________. So I think that should be us. If nothing else, we've earned more right than the Johnnies-come-lately, or the overpaid critic, or the crackpots.

So I say we take matters into our own hands. Think of it as a grand experiment. Simply start referring to the monster as Aphynos. That's all you have to do. If someone questions it, be honest. It's our name for the monster.

So that's a plan. Maybe it sounds stupid. I don't know. I lack objectivity: http://www.aphynos.com/. But I have to say that right here, right now, it sounds like it's at least worth a shot, given the potential payoff--to have named a legendary monster.
