Fun stuff

The home page code is tough. Not sure how to solve that one. The other Brain Teasers are cool. I found some random hints on the site, I assume are for the home page code, now I am trying to figure them out.

thoughts

Hi, uF... Back from a bit of a hiatus after Perplex City. I was mostly a solo-card solver and lurker back then; also lent my spare cycles to the brute force attempt on the 13th Labour organized by GuiN.

Anyway. I stumbled across codefused? a few days ago and rather thought I might find some support here if (and when) I got stuck.

Some observations:

About page:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
'find the easter eggs' in slightly larger font

Archives page:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
letters: D, w, s, c, b, A, A, r, K - randomly strewn about page on successive reloads. Capitalization remains throughout successive refreshes (i.e., DAKA always caps, wscbr always lower) . . .

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Rather obviously DrAwbAcKs or (more likely) bAcKwArDs?

Brain Teasers page:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
\|> /&$!> {$©<\ ]}? ?#} #$@} %|]} {$\} in tiny font

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
A simple substitution code easily solved using hints on the Contact page . . .

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
DAN BROWN COULD GET THE HOME PAGE CODE

Home page:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
5 line drawings of rectangles are randomly strewn in a frame upon refresh. Wait a few seconds, and they flash randomly . . .

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Clicking them in the proper order (I think bAcKwArDs but it's a bit quick for me to be sure) gives you a dialog box . . .

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it says:

.nieepntf-
cptrtpieosuiciioegtuo.
rdsevaoittolohorlnanmpmtmuaesedm,
boodgelnorstcnfkoacegenaoai,
egnkaohtvxrgiacoyteeoihmlfna

all on one line, no spaces. This seems to be simply . . .

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the main code on the home page in English rather than ... um ... whatever it is. Hope I didn't err in the transcription...

I worked a few of the puzzles in the Brain Teasers section; solved five of them and didn't see any further clues toward the main code.

Final thoughts on the main code:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Frequency analysis shows that the ciphertext is very close to English character frequency... or that's the way it appears to me anyway - I'm not anything approaching an expert in the area. So... would that imply that it's just big scrambled sentences and not a code at all? I don't know of an anagram solver that will work without spaces placed correctly. Also not much of a Dan Brown fan so I'm kinda lost as to what that hint could be pointing at. Anyone that's read Da Vinci have any ideas?

A lot of that is perhaps elementary and my apologies if I've gone overboard on the spoiler tags but I don't want to ruin it for anyone and figured better safe than sorry.

Any input would be appreciated!

-p

more clues

Looks like this is the only place I can find some helpful clues for codefused.com.

When I tried the random boxes on the Home page a while back I got:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Caesar
and then also
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
square 121
after that.

But now it has:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
.nieepntf-cptrtpieosuiciioegtuo.rdsevaoittolohorlnanmpmtmuaesedm,boodgelnorstcnfkoacegenaoai,egnkaohtvxrgiacoyteeoihmlfna

Like you (Perdurabo) mentioned above.

What triggered me was you got the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Dan Brown clue. I rembered something about a Caeser's Box cipher in one of his books, not sure which. So I got the square root of 121 which is 11 so I set up the text in 11 groups aligned vertically. Problem is, now I don't see any message.

I am sure I am on the right path. Anyone else have ideas?

site down?

Will look into this, jBEgood... Unfortunately, the site seems to be down at the moment. Getting all sorts of errors when I try to access it.

thoughts on the code

I'm thinking you're right, jBE... the
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Caesar/11/121

connection is too convenient for you to not be on the right path. Glad you remembered that as I never got those clues and like I said wouldn't have put the author together with that.

Did a bit of searching and found that
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it boils down to a transposition cipher (although perhaps it was mis-described by Brown as being used by Caesar?). In any case, bearing in mind my earlier remarks about the frequency distribution, this looks like a good candidate for columnar transposition. I've put it into a grid (first column, top-to-bottom: . n i e e p n t f - c) and these new rows look more anagram-friendly to me but no luck on figuring out the column order yet (could CAESAR'S BOX be a key here?? - 11 chars) ... I do think (due to the location of the top left period, the fact that the commas are facing backward, and the 'backwards' clue) that this thing starts at the bottom right and works to the upper left.

Done for now!

Any fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius - and a lot of courage to move in the opposite directipn. (Last word spelled wrong in the cipher)

My bad...

Sorry...I'm Guest. Was trying to figure out how to use the system. I don't post too often.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Put all the letters in an 11x11 box. Start at the lower right hand corner and keep reading up and to the right along the diagonals until you've ended at the period in the upper-left corner. It'll say the quote from the previous post. It's attributed to Albert Einstein.

completed

Well done, freshness, you nailed it!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I was intent on finding a columnar transposition - hadn't noticed the diagonal route in that grid. Anyway, I tried your Einstein quote and it worked perfectly (without the spelling error).

Good stuff, everyone. They claim there will be a new code to break over there within a week.

codefused?
Looks like the new puzzle is posted.

It is a bit different then the others. Looks like it is more of a puzzle trail. I have already figured out the first one. Still working on the second.

Better start for this new puzzle then the last one.
