Greetings. It's me, Matt the Pale. My time here at the Unforums was unfortunately much shorter than I would have liked it to be -- I found Unfiction when I first joined the Lost Experience, and even though I wanted to join in with the community on playing other ARGs, I never got the chance to do so. However, I saw the trailer for 1-18-08 in the theaters when I went to see Transformers. Upon discovering that it was from J. J. Abrams and that it seemed that he was starting an ARG based on it, I feel compelled to give you a warning.

I must admit, the style of the trailer really got my attention -- the hand-held camera style, the out-of-the blue occurance of chaos in the city, explosions, and of course the lack of a name for the movie. Sure, I could see how this might have the potential to be a really awesome movie with a good ARG to go along with it. Then I remembered this was from J.J. Abrams.

Don't get me wrong. I will say this about Abrams: he's really good at hooking people with an interesting-looking story. I was hooked on Alias when it first aired. I also thought Lost was interesting when it first aired. Then, both times, both of those shows turned into a major disappointment. Some of you may remember me from my participation from the Lost Experience ARG. It, too, was disappointing (to put it lightly).

My warning is this: enjoy 1-18-08 while you can, for in the end, you will walk away feeling like you've been had. If at all possible, play some other ARG -- there are many good ones out there that are worth playing: none of them come from Abrams. As for myself, I will no longer allow that con man to pull another one on me.

Wow, can you say "taking things a little too seriously" ? Someone needs a different hobby or to get outside a little bit. If all that upsets you like that, then id hate to see what something that meant something for real would do to you. Say it with me " Its only a game" well, if u can call it that. Point being, dont take things so serious. In the end, did this really cause you any physical or mental harm. And if it did cause you mental harm, then its you and not it that needs help. i just cant understand how someone can get so worked up about something so meaningless. Someone needs to see their doctor about their stress issues or something . Wow, just wow Rolling Eyes

The guy saw fit to give his educated (and correct, as anyone who is familiar with J.J. Abrams history will know) opinion to the board, so that we may benefit from it. YOU should chill out if you're so offended by well-meant words of caution from a months-old thread.

Also, if ARGs (Cloverfield isn't even an ARG) are "meaningless" you should probably just stop posting.

Also, this has been bothering me. It's Saiya-jin and Kakarotto. English dub is crap. That is all.

I've been following Cloverfield for a while now. But I'm not like OMG, I need to spend every minute of my day figuring out what the monster is, or what this clue means. I've never really liked JJ's stuff before. I mean, Alias was good for a while. And I loved Felicity, and Lost bores me. So if I don't like Cloverfield, then I just don't like it. I won't feel bad about not liking it.

It's the same way with Peter Jackson. Heavenly Creatures is one of my favourite movies, but I felt like hanging myself during the Lord of The Rings. I just didn't like it. Little dudes running around in bare feet trying to save a ring.

P.S. I have the books and read them, and I still didn't like them. But I recently realized that the "Pipe Weed" was actually weed, so maybe if I read it again with the idea that they were all stoned I might like it better.

Has the definition of emo degraded so far that anyone who disagrees with you without getting "in your face" is emo?

Damn, I call this guy Nostrodamus not emo.

another thing while I'm ranting a bit: Why do people get all bothered by forum necromancy? If an old thread happens to have pertinent info why get upset if it get ressurected? I've been on forums where this kind of thing gets people temp-bans..... (obviously I'm fine with it)

I would love to have your talent, I mean, having a person all figured out like that by just looking at one of their post, I applaud you.

I really hope the OP is wrong but there is only 3 days left for this ARE to be "completed".

In other posts I've made it clear I think ARE/ARGs can be standalone and not necessary to enjoy whatever product they are working for (I love bees, The Beast, etc.) However, I have also said a good ARE/ARG needs a complete story of its own. Right now this ARE is feeling more like the Robert Jordan books that say George RR Martin books.

So 3 days left to have the OP proved wrong. I sure hope he is and if he is not, motherf**king kudos to the OP and I will join the anti-JJ-ARE bandwagon in the future.

I think it is worth reminding people that this original post was from July. Matt was just giving his opinion based on experience and trying to help people find what he thought would be a better game. Whether people ultimately end up enjoying this promotion is a completely subjective thing. Matt's opinion was certainly shared by many people. Just as many others disagreed with him and still do.

I don't think we will ever come to a final conclusion as to whether this promotion was good or worth it or not - everyone has their own take on it. And why should we all agree? The diversity of opinions and viewpoints fuels this community.

Personally, I'm glad stayed with this promotion. I've found the community here to be what made this a memorable experience. Say what you will, but it was never, ever dull around here. The quality of the external structure of the promotion, particularly jamie and teddy and the whole whistleblower (huh?) concept - I'm not as thrilled with - but I think that we players, with our energy, creativity and enthusiasm made this promotion soar.

Actually...

Dead thread, eh? Well, here's my two cents for the ancient wishing well:

Whether or not Cloverfield is an ARG, I'm having fun with it. These forums are great to bounce ideas off of, but I'm just as happy to come to my own conclusions. I don't feel let down by anybody because I've had a few hours of free entertainment that has, so far, been very engaging.

Also thanks to Cloverfield, I've been introduced to the genre of ARGs and their community - a group of people that are curious by nature. And now, assuming that I haven't pissed the hardcores off too much, can anyone recommend a new-ish ARG for a new-ish player? If this is a "bad" one, I'd love to see something you all sink your teeth into.

I'm not saying this is a "bad" ARG. I don't think I've ever said that. God knows I've spent hours and hours of my time on this and I wouldn't do that for just anything that came along.

As for ARGs you might enjoy - I'm only mentioning here ones that I play or have followed:

1. Eldritch Errors - an independent ARG which deals with Lovecraft and a bunch of other stuff, it has a strong and very friendly community of players, a wiki guide and in-game forums. A new chapter is starting any time now. www.sentryoutpost.com

2. Dark Knight - a 42 entertainment created game promoting the Batman movie to be released later this year. While it hasn't had a large presence on unfiction, it is definitely being followed and played here. Again, it is starting up soon and I expect it to explode on unfiction when it does. It too has a wiki guide mantained by thebruce. http://batman.wikibruce.com/

3. Sarah Conner Chronicles: I have just started to look at this one. It is a tie-in with the TV show, might be ok. The unfiction thread is here: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=23279

Other ARGs:

Silverladders has a following - but I haven't had time to look at it.

Tom Tooman - which I think relates to the Jericho show

There are more if you read the CF potentials part of the forums.

If you like Lost, there is some game which is basically a flash based story (from what I've heard) unfiction thread: http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=22925
