Excellent assessment. For those of you who may hope upon hopes that this Viral Campaign will continue on to answer all questions, don't see it happening. I'm lookin for the new Trek ARG to start(and you know there will be one.)

backstory--it's alive
why do they say it's alive?

I know this has been talked about, but I think the people that have seen the movie are purposely leaving something out. There's gotta be some secret they are not sharing. It's stupid to look at a monster and then look at your buddy and say It's alive. What did he expect it to be? Even if Matt Reeves said it into the microphone, that's not an explanation. It should have never been a line in the movie if this movie has no backstory. It is an awkward piece of dialogue that doesn't fit.

J.J.'s "Mystery Box"

I think there could still be a backstory ARG, after the movie is released, but I'm not holding out much hope for that. I've never checked out any viral marketing campaigns before, so I don't have any points of reference here, but it has seemed to me that the stuff they were giving us - mostly the stuff about Tagruato - was too involved to just end once the movie came out. It seemed like setup for a more elaborate backstory/ARG yet to come.

But, given the points raised at the start of this thread, I just don't know anymore. Also, J.J. Abrams recently gave a talk at T.E.D. - which you can watch at this link...

http://www.ted.com/talks/view/id/205

As you'll see, the theme of the talk is J.J.'s love of mystery; specifically, the pitch he seems to be making is that, from a story-telling and movie-making point of view, a mystery that is never revealed is more effective than one that is. Even according to that philosophy, though, they could make a post-movie ARG where they don't really reveal that much; instead, they keep stringing us along in the hopes of bolstering DVD sales. We'll know soon enough, right? I mean, if all of this stuff dries up after the movie comes out, well then, there you have it.

In any case, enjoy the talk on T.E.D. (and, if anyone here is unfamiliar with T.E.D., check it out, b/c it's filled with amazing talks by brilliant people).

This whole extra layering of a story screams sequel or even trilogy. Any movie that only costs $30 million and makes (possibly) $100 million is going to get the green light faster than you can drive home after going through the Taco Bell drive-Thru.

I could go for a Cloverfield Taco Crunch Value Meal. Have like the taco shells shaped like NYC buildings....

Shocked

It's a very simple explanation, Reeves yelled it during the filming of the teaser, before any of them had a clue as to what true direction they were going to persue with/in the movie.

It's not like these guys do this stuff, then think.....oh HELL the ARGers ain't gonna like this! Gotta redo it fast!

Not.
