In the trailer, when the fireball hits the building, it lights up writing on the wall that says "ACE". Ace is the main character of this manga.
EDIT: you beat me to it.

Dennis, how do you find this shit? Are you a witch?
And why were you not in on any of these advanced screenings over the last week? Seems unfair that all these Lurkers, Noobs and Trolls* got to see it before you!
*Doesn't apply to everyone. If you're not a Lurker, Noob, or Troll, don't get all upset

Kishin is defined as... returning to the divine or kami, which refers to achieving a profound contemplative state where one is grounded to the divine universe.
In Shinto. Not period trust but a Period of Trust.....

Could be we stumbled into the Japanese marketing ARG for their opening. Like the Chuai newsclips in many languages, it follows that there would be similar backstories in other countries.

If I'm not mistaken it's Kosmopol not Konamouse who has been our friendly, neighborhood translator. If we have to wait for a translation, it's all good...This thing probably has more inconsistencies for us to complain about...

Perhaps in the ships, but Otomo's human drawing is completely different to this.

I've been trying to find the meaning for kishin and I also found the Shinto period reference but when I plug it into a dictionary I get several different terms (so the meaning depends on the context from what I can gather).
kishin - fierce god
kishin - noble, men of rank, notables
kishin = contribution (n,vs)
kishin = donation
kishin = fierce god (n)
kishin = homesickness (n)
起震車 【きしんしゃ】 (n) earthquake simulation vehicle
the last one is actually kishinsho but i thought it was funny

It's wierd. I think there are contemporary events like the ship, the part with the cell phone pic and the last page, mixed with flashbacks into Ganu's life.
Most depict him being picked on in school and saved by a girl. The other him as a small child and the death of his mom, Noriko. Perhaps the girl reminds him of his mother because she is kind and helps?
It may be the taking of his wallet and the only? pic of his Mom which prompt the flashback to early childhood and her death.
The last page seems to be his eyes filled with rage and the monster appearing.

Well I feel dumb. This is probably my favorite update ever. A manga of cloverfield? Damn...my japanese is terrible....like a 2nd grader at best. I can read the katakana and make out some phrases but a full translation? Sorry guys . I was trying to look for names but I can't seem to zoom in the pages and it's hindering the operation. -_- Well I gathered that Kishin is probably the glasses guys name. From the manga it almost seems as though Kishin summons forth the monster huh (At least it has that dramatic effect that their fates are intertwined)? I think I saw something about a second chapter coming soon too so looking forward to that.
Edit: Yeah on page 12-13 the guy putting his arm around the glasses kid says "Kishin-kun" So it might be a nickname or part of his actual name. Dunno.

I can't wait for the translation of this but it's easy to follow.
The first page is the cover with the squid, oil and chains and the next is the double title page.
The story starts with the kid having his head dunked in a bucket by some kids in the boys room. As the pages go by others come in and join in teasing him. His wallet falls to the floor and he tries to grab it and the blond guy who just joined in hits him and takes it. Another comes in and gets the idea to tie his hands behind him with his belt and then they take his pants.
The mean kids leave and on the way out toss his pants to some girl. The kid exits the boys room and runs into the girl and he is embarrassed. She unties him and gives him his pants, saying something nice which surprises him.
The mean blond kid comes back and confronts the girl for helping the kid and is about to hit her when there is an announcement over the school intercom, probably time to get to class and breaks up the fight. The mean kids seem to warn the girl and she leaves as the kid chases her as he puts on his pants but a couple of the mean kids grab him and seem to say we'll get you later.
Cut to a Tagruato ship trolling the ocean and a couple of shipmates, one showing the other a cell phone pic of his pregnant wife? The other guy just seems ticked.
Cut back to the school where the kid is pounding on a door trying to get his wallet back. It has a special picture of a young woman in it.
Cut to earlier in the kid's life when other kids where picking on him and the young woman (his mother?) helped him and gave him something to eat but it's a bit much for him I think. The woman dies though.
Cut back to the school with the mean kids and he is crying thinking about the woman.
Final page with him in a rage.....and the monster......
Perhaps Rest Period is his nickname, like Recess. They gave him that name because he's the one they pick on every Rest Period?
