[Spoilers]The non-ARG fanatic POV of Cloverfield

I've kept up on the viral campaign for Cloverfield for a few months now but never got big into the ARG as far as the story was concerned, but rather from a marketing point of view (though I have to admit even I was drawn into it from time to time). It was really great to see everyone speculating over what the monster was, who the characters were and how they were connected, etc.

That being said I managed to see an advanced screening of Cloverfield and I wasn't dissapointed one bit. A few points I'll say based on what I perceived to be the community's concern with some parts of the movie that have been revealed (I'll try not to spoil too much):
1.) I actually enjoyed the backstory that was spliced into the action throughout the movie. It gave a few much needed breathers and added some needed dimensionality to the main characters.
2.) You DO see the monster (almost in full glory) and I thought it was pretty damn cool. Because of the setting, camera POV and filming style though you never get a complete shot. But to me it only served to maintain the feel of the movie and the enigma of the Cloverfield monster. He even brings some friends to the party. Definitely NOT generic. Definitely creepy.
3.) If you're under 65, ever played a video game and don't suffer from vertigo the camera won't bother you.
4.) Even though I arrived with my girlfriend, I wanted to leave with Odette Yustman.

I can't really speak to too many of the inconsistencies between the stories of the viral campaign and the actual movie but I can do my best to answer questions from memory. Overall I thought it was a fun, thrilling, strangely realistic, creepy, cool movie. The other people who got to see it seemed to really enjoy it as well. Definitely the kind of movie you talk about throughout the whole dinner afterwards. I'll be seeing it again, unfortunately having to pay for the second run.

It's not "There Will Be Blood" or "No Country for Old Men". It won't win Best Picture, Director, Actor/Actress or even, admittedly, a whole lot of FX Oscars. That doesn't mean it's not a whole lot of fun. I'd say leave your presumptions at the ticket counter and just enjoy the ride.
