Has a 56% so far. The big reviews won't come in until tomorrow. However, here's a brief non-spoilery rundown.

If you can't deal with shaky cam and amateur home movie style filming, you'll hate it.

If you're expecting the next "I Am Legend", you'll hate it.

If you take it for what it is, a clever take on monster movies thanks to its point of view, you'll love it.

I read some of the reviews, but this blurb from Dark Horizons sums up my expectations:

"'Cloverfield' is simply a clever, albeit derivative, spin on a very predictable genre, and as such its easy to indulge in if you go with the inherit silliness"

No I haven't seen it yet, but I've been spoiled. I still bought my tickets because it is EXACTLY what I expected it to be. No more and no less.

I think its going to be either you love it or you hate it. No room for middle-of-the-roadness.

So far it looks like about 50/50 with the critics and 75/25 with the fans.

I posted this over in the press/questions subforum a few minutes ago:

Quote:
RT tracking on Cloverfield: Earlier today it had a freshness rating of 50%, now it's up to 65% freshness. "T-Meter Critics" is currently tracking at a 67% freshness while "Top Critics" are tracking at a 80% freshness rating.

These numbers will no doubt change back and forth and I expect some wild swings over the next few days, however I'm still sticking by my original prediction of an overall "B" grade. One of the drawbacks is Cloverfield is a big target with all the recent marketing hype so you're going to get the haters out in force which will skew the reviews a little.

*FYI* "27 Dresses", which was moved to this weekends release is currently at a 22% freshness rating. Oh well, should have kept the original release date.

Also EW Magazine gives Cloverfield a grade of B+

RT Update as of this morning:

70% fresh on the main list, 80% if you narrow it down to top critics.

I think we got a live one here! Very Happy

But I have to wait until tomorrow night...boooo Mad

Honestly, as a genre flick shot on the cheap with a gimmick, I don't see it making more than a B regardless of hype. There are critics who appreciate a popcorn flick and those who don't. They'll tear it down far enough to keep it from breaking 85% on the main list (and that's being REALLY optimistic).

I guess it does relate to audience expectations - I don't think anyone here is going into the movie expecting "Art" or inspiration, just some entertainment.

I'm not sure if this is a spoiler or not, but I wonder if the all these months suffering through the promotion makes us--as opposed to the regular audience-- happy if characters die? I haven't seen the movie yet, but this is one film where I really don't think I'll mind if they all die. I might even cheer. And, if you know me, that is completely out of character.

Funny, the promotion actually made me dislike the characters intensely rather than bond with them or care about their fate.
