I know the monster's name. And I have a question about
The Colbert Report. Yes, it's related.

Actually, we all know the monster's name, it just seems it never clicked (if it did, and this has been said before, then...well...it's been said before...yeah...). I realized this while I was on the can last night (no joke Laughing ).

In the trailer it says:

"MULTIPLE SIGHTINGS OF CASE DESIGNATE CLOVERFIELD"

CLOVERFIELD isn't just used to reference the incident, it is the monster (hence the "sightings" of "Cloverfield").

Now, my question 'bout "The Colbert Report":

One of the episodes from last week (not sure which day) had Stephen pulling out his laptop or something (don't remember exactly how it went down, it might have been a totally different scenario) and on the screen was an image that looked similar to the Cloverfield poster. It seemed to show the skyline with the (decapitated) Statue of Liberty in the foreground, just like the poster, same color palette and everything, but it was kinda blocky/simplistic looking (i.e., it wasn't the exact same image.). Weird marketing strategy?

Just wondering if anyone else noticed (or am I just plain wrong?).

P.S. He did not mention it at all; I don't remember what he was talking about, but it was entirely unrelated.

No, its "case designate" cloverfield.

The military doesnt give out names of things, they designate names to things. Like "charley", "tango", whatever. If this were real, the military would code name everything related to the event under cloverfield.

i doubt thats the monsters name, it'd be a dumb monster name if u ask me.

its just the case title for the event is my idea.

So if the monster's name is Cloverfield, this must be it:

But it's "sightings of case designate Cloverfield." Now that I think about it, they probably didn't intend for this to be its name, but taking the sentence literally, that's what it says.

He has the awesome tendency to whore himself out to different advertisers from time to time. I would not be at all surprised if you saw correctly, and it was a small tidbit set up by Paramount, an ad just big enough to go, "Wait. Was that -?"

I'm kind of convincing myself OP is right.

If it said "case designated Cloverfield" (note the "...ED"), then clearly that would be the code name for the incident. It is the case designated Cloverfield, where New York gets smashed.

"Multiple sightings of..." kind of implies that Cloverfield is the thing they saw, in other words the monster. You wouldn't say, "There were multiple sightings of New York getting smashed." You'd just say, "New York got smashed, and it is still smashed, so we know it got smashed."

I think it's possible to read it either way. But because it is "designate" rather than "designated", the designate is... MGP. The designate, for which there are multiple sightings, is called Cloverfield. A big-ass monster.

Of course, a quick search on webster for "designate" reveals they are using the word badly in any case. But "designate" seems to be an adjective meaning it's the name we're using for the monster for now, until we come up with a better one (such as MGP).

Personally, I'm starting to agree with OP that Cloverfield is the code name the military assigned to the monster.

(uh oh... does this post make me a fanboy?)

(edit...) On the other hand, the director seems to answer it both ways. From wikipedia:
The director said that "Cloverfield" was the government's case designate for the monster, comparing the titling to that of the Manhattan Project. "And it's not a project per se. It's the way that this case has been designated. That's why that is on the trailer, and it becomes clearer in the film. It's how they refer to this phenomenon [or] this case," said the director.

So he basically answers it both ways; Cloverfield is the incident and the monster.
